(born 1949 in Brookline, Massachusetts) is an American experimental filmmaker. He attended Deerfield Academy which he left before graduating to move to New York in 1965 to pursue filmmaking. He lived in New York until 1967 when he and his partner, \u003Ca href=\u0022\/site\/en\/wiki\/artist\/gregory-jmarkopoulos\u0022\u003EGregory Markopoulos\u003C\/a\u003E, left the United States for Europe, where they continued to live and make films until Markopoulos\u0027 death in 1992.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EBoth filmmakers restricted the screenings of their films after leaving America, and instead held yearly screenings of Markopoulos\u0027 and Beavers\u0027 work from 1980-1986 at the Temenos, a site near Lyssaraia in Arcadia, Greece. After Markopoulos\u0027 death, Beavers founded \u003Ca href=\u0022http:\/\/www.thetemenos.org\/\u0022\u003ETemenos, Inc.\u003C\/a\u003E, a non-profit devoted to the preservation of Markopoulos\u0027 and Beavers\u0027 work. Beavers has worked extensively on re-editing his films to create the larger film cycle \u003Cem\u003E\u003Ca href=\u0022..\/article\/My_Hand_Outstretched_to_the_Winged_Distance_and_Sightless_Measure\/\u0022\u003EMy Hand Outstretched to the Winged Distance and Sightless Measure\u003C\/a\u003E\u003C\/em\u003E.\u003C\/p\u003E\n\u003Cp\u003EBeavers\u2019s use of shaped mattes to obscure aspects of the image and gelatine filters that produce varieties of coloured light are hallmarks of some of his films, many of which observe hand- and craftwork (including his own filmmaking).\u00a0Born\u00a0in Brookline, Massachusetts, Beavers attended Deerfield Academy before meeting the filmmaker Gregory J. Markopoulos in 1966. They moved to Europe in 1967 and removed their films from distribution; Beavers did not show his films in the United States again until 1996. Beavers made films in Greece, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. His early\u00a0\u003Cem\u003EPlan of Brussels\u003C\/em\u003E\u00a0and\u00a0\u003Cem\u003EWinged Dialogue\u003C\/em\u003E\u00a0(1967-68\/2000) are multilayered psychic explorations;\u00a0\u003Cem\u003EFrom the Notebook of\u2026\u003C\/em\u003E(1971\/1998) is set in Florence and inspired by Leonardo\u2019s notebooks.\u00a0\u003Cem\u003ERuskin\u003C\/em\u003E\u00a0(1975\/1997) is shot at the various sites of the titular artist\/critic\u2019s work in London, the Alps and Venice. Beavers\u2019s only film to use intertitles, the dialogic\u00a0\u003Cem\u003ESotiros\u003C\/em\u003E\u00a0(1976-78\/1996) marks the end of his use of filters and mattes.\u00a0\u003Cem\u003EWingseed\u003C\/em\u003E( 1985),\u00a0\u003Cem\u003EThe Hedge Theater\u003C\/em\u003E\u00a0(1986-90\/2002),\u00a0\u003Cem\u003EThe Stoas\u003C\/em\u003E\u00a0(1991-97), and\u00a0\u003Cem\u003EThe Ground\u003C\/em\u003E\u00a0(1993-2001) dwell in pastoral environments in Italy and Greece.
