Crossroads

Founded by filmmaker Bruce Baillie in 1961, San Francisco Cinematheque is the Bay Area’s premier venue for avant-garde/experimental, underground and personally expressive film and video work. In its steadfast dedication to exhibiting works of aesthetically radical cinema from all historical eras and geo-political locales, San Francisco Cinematheque celebrates the breadth and depth of this vibrant art form in all its myriad expressivities.

    San Francisco Cinematheque seeks submissions of recent films and videos for CROSSROADS 2015, the sixth manifestation of our annual film festival to be held April 10–12 at San Francisco's Victoria Theatre.CROSSROADS 2015 will showcase new film/video works by emerging and established filmmakers, including performance and works of “live cinema.” Cinematheque seeks submissions of compelling non-commercial, artist-made work of all genres and durations.

    Inaugurated in 2010, CROSSROADS is the only major West Coast film festival dedicated exclusively to the exhibition of contemporary and historic avant-garde film and video work. Artists featured in previous years have included Malic Amalya, Stephanie Barber, Tommy Becker, Amanda Dawn Christie, Caryn Cline, Nathaniel Dorsky, Erin Espelie, Dale Hoyt, Ken Jacobs, Lawrence Jordan, Laida Lertxundi, Jeanne Liotta, Jodie Mack, Jesse Malmed, Jeremy Moss, Robert Nelson, Alee Peoples, Greg Pope, Ben Rivers, Michael Robinson, Margaret Rorison, Ken Paul Rosenthal, Ben Russell, Mónica Savirón, Scott Stark, Alexander Stewart, Makino Takashi, Robert Todd and Karen Yasinsky.

    San Francisco Cinematheque seeks submissions of recent films and videos for Crossroads 2013, the fourth manifestation of our annual film festival. Occurring the first weekend in April, 2013 at San Francisco's Victoria Theatre, Crossroads 2013 will showcase new film/video works by emerging and established filmmakers, including performance and works of “live cinema.” Cinematheque seeks submissions of compelling non-commercial, artist-made work of all genres and durations.

    Entry Guidelines
    — Submitted works must have been completed after January 1, 2011.
    — Include one submission form with each entry.
    — Submissions are accepted on DVD and in the form of streaming online video. See entry form or online submission form for details.
    — Please include a pre-paid, self-addressed package with your submission if you would like items to be returned.
    — Entry fee: $10 for each individual film (postmarked by Dec. 31, 2012); $15 for each individual film (postmarked by Jan. 30, 2013). Entry fee is waived for Cinematheque members.
    — Please make checks or money-orders payable in U.S. currency to: SAN FRANCISCO CINEMATHEQUE; electronic payments can be sent via Paypal to festival@sfcinematheque.org
    — CROSSROADS 2013 will (potentially) screen work in the following film/video formats: 8mm, Super-8mm, 16mm, 35mm, QuickTime ProRes and Blu-ray. Please contact festival@sfcinematheque.org with inquiries concerning additional exhibition formats.

    Crossroads 2012SF Cinematheque announces Crossroads 2012 May 18–20 at San Francisco's Victoria Theatre. Founded by filmmaker Bruce Baillie in 1961, San Francisco Cinematheque is an internationally recognized arts institution and the Bay Area’s premier venue for avant-garde/experimental, underground and personally expressive film and video work.

    Cinematheque is dedicated to the advancement and dissemination of film and video works that challenge the boundaries of moving-image art with the goal of making experimental cinema a part of the larger cultural landscape. CROSSROADS is Cinematheque’s annual film festival, a showcase for and celebration of recent and rediscovered avant-garde film/video work. Established in 2010, CROSSROADS is intended as a much-needed Bay Area/West Coast equivalent to such lauded festivals as the New York Film Festival’s Views from the Avant-Garde series and the Toronto International Film Festival’s Wavelengths showcase. CROSSROADS 2012, curated by Cinematheque Artistic Director Steve Polta, is this festival’s third manifestation.

    Running May 18–20, CROSSROADS will present a total of 52 films, videos and performance works by 47 filmmakers from around the world screened over 8 feature-length programs. Highlights of this festival include a tribute to Cinematheque founder and experimental-film matriarch Chick Strand (1931–2009); an in-person presentation of the “complete works” of Basque filmmaker Laida Lertxundi (featured in this year’s Whitney Biennial); and a special program—Apparent Motion—celebrating the Art of Live Projection with three film/music collaborative teams: Gerritt Wittmer & Paul Knowles, Kerry Laitala & John Davis, and, from Norway, Greg Pope & John Hegre (Jazkamer).
