S8 Mostra de Cinema Periférico

The (S8) is an event held in A Coruña the first week of June. (S8) brings to the city an international film festival with a unique concept in our country that has as reference essential world events such as Rotterdam, Oberhausen, Ann Arbor, Media City, Images Festival (Toronto), 25 FPS (Zagreb), Viennale, Courtisane or Vila do Conde, and places A Coruña on the map of filmmaking.

These are some of the principles that guide the 9th edition of (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico that, under the title Lux Algebra, invoke the alchemical film elements that manipulate time and its structures, in order to define a program that complete the trilogy dedicated to film creation the Mostra has been developing in these past editions, from the light with The New Impressionists (2016) to the material that supports the images with Objects and Appearances (2017), on the concepts of appropriation of found footage.

  • (S8) Mostra de Cine Periférico 2017

    (S8) Mostra Internacional de Cinema Periférico will return to A Coruña from May 31 to June 4 to celebrating a special anniversary- its 8th edition - with an ambitious program. The new edition, under the title of Objects and Apparitions, is inspired by found footage cinema under the figure of the seminal artist of this film process, Joseph Cornell. The legacy of the North American multidisciplinary and surrealist creator has guided the elaboration of the official poster, where, imitating a kind of Cornell box, the spirit of appropriation is used to reflect his whole philosophy. Together with Cornell, the (S8) will present the works of two of the most prominent representatives of found footage film now: Cécile Fontaine and Luther Price. In addition, the program Found Sounds, curated by Mónica Savirón, will revolve around the work of Dutch filmmaker Barbara Meter.

  • 7th (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico: New Impressionists

    (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico celebrates its seventh edition in A Coruña from June 1 to 5. This time the festival will hold a special edition under the tilte of "New Impressionists", bringing together both emergent and veteran filmmakers whose work engages the experimentation with light and its pictorial qualities. Probing the limits of sensory perception and subjectivity, this group of filmmakers has signed some of the most visually stimulating works made in recent years. This is the case of Canadian filmmaker Stephen Broomer that will present a fine selection of his 16mm works. Films in which the colors and textures evoke the work of the original Impressionists, and in which the author uses fast sweeps, collisions and movements that challenge the eye, and make imagine the filmmaker operating the camera as if you ran a box light with the ways of action painting.

  • (S8) 6th Mostra de Cinema Periférico

    This year's edition of (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (June 3-7, A Coruña, Spain) is focused on two main strands: on the one hand, a Ken Jacobs restrospective, including two Nervous Magic Lantern performances and a masterclass; on the other hand, a focus on Brazilian avant-garde cinema, including classic films as Mario Peixoto's Límite or others by proponents of the CInema Novo and Cinema Marginal movements such as Glauber Rocha, Nelson Pereira dos Santos and Rogério Sganzerla. The artistic duo Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn (Distruktur) will present a selection of their works and a triple film performance using 16mm projectors. The Brazilian avant-garde section will also imnclude works by Duo Strangloscope, Gustavo Beck, Ana Vaz, Helder Martinovsky, Priscyla Bettim and Renato Coelho.

  • (S8) 5th Mostra de Cinema Periférico

    This year's edition of (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (June 4-8, A Coruña, Spain) is focused on Japanese experimental cinema. Renowned filmmaker and artist Takahiko Iimura will be the main protagonist of the festival, with a dedicated programme, a live performance and the installation As I See You See Me. The programme will also feaure screenings by super8 filmmaker Teruo Koike and [+] members Makino Takashi, Shinkan Tamaki and Rei Hayama. 'Through a Rearview Mirror: Japanese Experimental Films Revisited' is the title of the retrospective curated by Doble Negative Collective founder Daïchi Saïto, who will also introduce a programme of his own films.

    The Media City Film Festival will be the guest in this edition, where their directors and programmers Jeremy Rigsby and Oona Mosna will present a selection of films from the veteran festival's 20 years of life. The growing expanded cinema section will also include performances by Esperanza Collado, Makino Takashi and the Crater Collective.

  • (S8) 4th Mostra de Cinema Periférico

    The 4th edition of (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico, to be held next June 5-8 in A Coruña, Spain, focuses this year on Argentinian experimental cinema: several programmes, curated by Pablo Marín and Magdalena Arau, will center on the history of Argentinian experimental film (Phanton Anthology, featuring the works of Narcisa Hirsch, Horacio Vallereggio, Jorge Honik & Laura Abel or Gabriel Romano); the work of Super8 filmmakers Pablo Mazzolo, Sergio Subero and Pablo Marín; and a selection of amateur and domestic cinema. Claudio Caldini, the legendary S8 filmmaker will be present to introduce a retrospective of his films both in single channel and expanded versions, including his latest works H R Z N T (2011), Fantasmas Cromáticos (2012) and Tamil Nadu View (2010); and also to conduct a workshop on multiple projection and expanded cinema. Fernando Martín Peña and Fabio Manes, directors of the TV programme “Filmoteca, Temas de Cine” will present a selection of rarely-seen films, from early silent movies to the work of the recently deceased filmmaker Leonardo Favio. Last but not least, the section Sinais will focus on the work of Galician artists Lois Patiño and Miguel Mariño.

  • (S8) 3ª Mostra de Cine Periférico

    (S8) logoThe 3rd edition of (s8) Mostra de Cine Periférico (May 30-June 3, A Coruña, Spain) continues its annual celebration of 'peripheral cinema' and small gauges. Austrian filmmaker Peter Kubelka will be one of its main protagonists with a screening of his films, the masterclass 'The edible metaphor' and the screening of Martina Kudlácek's documentary film 'Fragments of Kubelka'. The section 'The second life of images' has as its main attraction the programme curated by Gloria Vilches and Elena Duque 'The new monster', dedicated to appropriation and collage film, with individual programmes dedicated to and the presence of Lewis Klahr and Janie Geiser; the manipulated found-footage films of Naomi Uman and the latest creation of Andrés Duque 'Dress rehearsal for Utopia' are the other protagonists of the section. (S8)'s full programme hasn't been disclosed yet.

    Man With Mirror (Guy Sherwin, 1976-2010)The 2nd edition of (s8) Mostra de Cine Periférico (June 2-5, A Coruña, Spain) continues its exploration of 'peripheral cinema' and small gauges. Among the many highlights of this year's edition are the screening of the recently discovered 'complete' version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, that will open the festival; screenings and performances by Guy Sherwin and Zoe Beloff; several curated programmes of contemporary super8 films; and installations by Left Hand Rotation and Vari Caramés.

    In collaboration with CGAI and La Casa Encendida (Madrid), the festival will present the programme 'Heaven on Earth', with monographic screenings of Nathaniel Dorsky, Zoe Beloff, Phil Solomon and Robert Beavers. The full programme will be announced soon.

  • El cielo en la Tierra

    The snowman (Phil Solomon, 1995)El cielo en la Tierra (Heaven on Earth) is an eleven-programme retrospective of four American filmmakers whose work deals with 'other dimensions' through their cinematic forms: Zoe Beloff, Nathaniel Dorsky, Phil Solomon and Robert Beavers. Curated by Garbiñe Ortega and presented as a collaboration between La Casa Encendida (Madrid) and (S8) Mostra de Cinema Periférico (A Coruña), the retrospective will dedicate several programmes to each filmmaker, trying to offer a panoramic view of the main themes covered in their careers. Zoe Beloff (June 6-10, Madrid) and Nathaniel Dorsky (May 31st and June 1st, Madrid) will be present in several of the screenings for Q&A, and Beloff will do a 3D performance and a workshop on video performances and installations.

    (s8) 1ª Mostra de Cine Periférico logoThe first edition of the (S8) Peripheral Film Festival to be held next June 3-6 in A Coruña, Spain, aims to 'combine the new cinematographic trends... with the temporary and historical trail that the cinematographic format has been providing since its appearance'. During its four days, the newly-born festival packs an incredible programme featuring partial restrospectives of Iván Zulueta and Eugenio Granell's s8 film works, a session of Spanish contemporary s8 experimental films focusing on the work of David Domingo, videoinstallations by Maria Cañas and Alberte Pagán and a 16mm projectors performance by Bruce McClure.
