  • Ricardo Nicolayevsky: Portraits in Movement

    By on

The Center for Digital Culture pays tribute to Ricardo Nicolayevsky, an artist whose work marks a milestone in audiovisual experimentation and the intersection of cinema and the performing arts.  Drawing from different genres and practices, from cabaret, to musical composition, performance art, and improvisation, Nicolayevsky’s work reveals the promiscuous possibilities of the moving image, creating delirious cinematic atmospheres and experiences that seek to subvert conventional modes of viewing and making cinema.

This three-part retrospective celebrates his diligently un-disciplinary practice.

  • Fuori Formato – Focus on Austrian Avant-garde with Johann Lurf

    By on

After an homage to Peter Tscherkassky and Eve Heller, curated by Atelier Impopulaire for the last edition, Fuori Formato, the short film section of Filmmaker Festival (Milan), continues its exploration of Austrian Avant-garde under the guide of young experimental film talent Johann Lurf, who will be in Milan as artist in focus and guest curator. A selection of his films dedicated to the analysis of spaces and architectures will be presented in a personal programme and then discussed with the artist in a masterclass.

A to A: Perspectives on Austrian Avant-garde is a three-part programme focusing mainly (with few significant exceptions) on the last two decades and on younger generations: not a comprehensive mapping, but a personal voyage through essential works and minor episodes in the ever-lively scene of Austrian experimental cinema. Included there is a special micro-programme of experimental film trailers, with two foreign special guests (Ken Jacobs and James Benning’s trailers for the Viennale) and the world premiere of Norbert Pfaffenbichler’s Short Film, consisting of only four frames.

  • From doodles to Pixels: Over One Hundred Years of Spanish Animation

    By on

From Doodles to Pixels is a coproduction of the CCCB and AC/E that brings together a selection of films animated using diverse techniques that represent turbulent times ranging from the early twentieth century to the present day. It features recurring themes such as links with the world of comic books, reflections of political concerns and dialogue with the visual arts.

The film programme, curated by Carolina López, charts a course through a selection of the landmark works of Spanish animation of all times. The cycle includes historic films (from 1908 to the end of the dictatorship in 1975) and contemporary shorts (from 1975 to the present day). This has involved the restoration and digitization of works that were previously “invisible” because of their condition or the difficulty of accessing them, using the best possible materials in each case.

You can read the history of statues as the history of power. When a statue is symbolically brought down after a revolt, this means the end of a regime, whether it is a tsaar or a dictator in the Middle-East. In this program we investigate the relation between a state and the power it represents.

  • Magasinet Walden: Mary Helena Clark

    By on

Magasinet Walden presents a screening dedicated to the work of Mary Helena Clark. Born in 1983, for 10 years she has produced a wealth of substantial works. Her films are characterized by an unusual dualistic approach where a rigorous formalist work, which spins further on the structuralist film's ideas and practices, combines with an interest in magic and illusionism. We show Clark's overall filmography, together with Robert Breer's Breathing (1963) and Blake Williams' Something Horizontal (2015), two films that Clark has chosen to include in the programme.
