Brussels based artist Els van Riel (b 1965) is a member of the analogue film-lab Labo Bxl and Cinema Parenthèse. Her films, videos and installations examine the impact of detailed changes in moment, movement, matter, light and perception. Her works relate to a tradition of minimal and structural filmmaking (Paul Sharits, Ernie Gehr), she processes the basic elements of film - time and light, silence and sound - and develops a form for expanded aesthetic saturation based on phenomenological observation within a sensitive and personal horizon that bypasses symbolism and narrativity.

Microscope Gallery is pleased to welcome to the gallery Boston-based filmmaker Saul Levine for an evening of 8mm and super 8mm films organized by Lumia Lightsmith.
“Levine has tackled many subjects as a filmmaker: love loss, war, music, the seasons, light, and loss again. But the film he makes of each is the same film, the one ongoing film of the film in the making…The pleasure in this for the viewer is, of course, the combined one of voyeuristically glimpsing into the life of an artist and, for those of us familiar with his other work, encountering an old friend up to new tricks.” – Marjorie Keller
Edge of Frame and Close-Up are proud to present a two-part programme of films by highly acclaimed experimental animator Jodie Mack. Part one gathers a selection of shorts, illuminating formal and cursory elements shared between fine-art abstraction and mass-produced graphic design; whilst part two presents the UK premiere of her highly anticipated debut feature The Grand Bizarre. We’re thrilled that Jodie will be present throughout and will be in conversation following both screenings.
We're excited to welcome Abigail Child to ArtCinema OFFoff for a program of readings of her experimental writing. Abigail Child is mainly known for her work as an experimental filmmaker. OFFoff engages itself to extend the attention and interest in her work to her experimental writing. Los Angeles Filmforum is pleased to present two nights of the work of Berlin-based filmmaker Ute Aurand with the artist in attendance. Stemming from the lyrical tradition of diary filmmaking and artisanal practices, her active and playful films emphasize the natural and social worlds through intimate forms of portraiture. She gives distinct attention to the inner dialogues of thought and the tactile experiences of women.
Johnny Welch, filmmaker and photographer from Sydney, Australia lives in Berlin for more than 3 years and is an active member of Labor Berlin. Since coming to Berlin, his work has become more strongly connected with the aesthetic of analog film, with the possibilities of optical printing. Even if edited and projected digitally, analog compositing seems to allow him to create a richer image of high density and depth.
