Repeated Apparitions is a programme of screenings, performances and events that muse over repetitive cycles of oppression and their social invisibility and normalisation. Through a shared exploration of radical images, wild experimental sounds and evocative texts, the programme looks at how repetition can be used to create processes of reparation and renewal, disrupt the past and imagine new realities.

A group show of experimental film and video artists that explore the notion of before-and-after a memorable event in relation to their work. Does the “after” mirror the “before” or is the reflection completely different? Each artist responds to the question in a different way. This group screening reflects on a binary aspect of ‘before and after’ an event, trauma, pandemic, or “just” the passage of time, and the way it influences the cinematic narrative as well as the artist’s reading of the concept itself.

Stan Brakhage (1933-2003) is most well-known for the development, from the late 1950s onwards, of a cinema (he made over 450 films) in which the camera replaces the protagonist, freeing it from conventional positions and hence engagement with both subject and the viewer. His work is characterized by images where variations in exposure and focus, handheld camera movement, light flares, refractions and flashes are in a constant state of flux and interplay.
