  • Esperanza Collado: Loose Ends

    By on

In this session we are going to talk about an accident, a loss, and the accident of loss. A film will be developed in the room, and we do not know if it ever existed or if it was dematerialized before being. It may be that the celluloid takes over the room and expands beyond the projected image. Or, on the contrary, that all the ideas that come together in a room are condensed and visualized in the film of the film. Or, simply, that we do not see it but rather that it is told to us.

  • The Devotional Cinema of Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler

    By on

"Intermittence penetrates to the very core of our being, and film vibrates in a way that is close to this core." In his book Devotional Cinema, filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky identifies the feeling of illness or health that follows experiencing certain films, and locates as the cause a film's ability to "mirror and realign our metabolism." For example, the intermittent quality of light in film projection is not unlike our natural vision or the way we experience life (with gaps and moments of the unknown).

Whether in his own work or in his collaboration with artist Christoph Girardet, which has grown since 1999: At the heart of this work is an exploration of appropriated footage, some found by chance and some elaborately researched and collected. Its origins range from Hollywood to home movies, from stock footage agencies to private chat rooms.
