Portraits: Films by Ute Aurand and Margaret Tait

The September Mutual Films Session features films by artists who have been collaborators and friends. Berliner filmmaker and curator Ute Aurand (born in 1957), one of the greatest contemporary exponents of experimental cinema in Europe, will come to Brazil for the first time to present two programs of her films (all in their Brazilian premieres) in their original format in 16 mm She will also present a program of short films by the Scottish filmmaker and poet Margaret Tait (1918-1999) – whose work process Aurand knew in depth in the 1990s –, in new high-resolution digital copies that have been shown at festivals and cinematheques around the world in recent years in honor of the centenary of Tait.

TypoFilm: Light Reading

An emblematic figure of the British scene, Lis Rhodes directed Light Reading in 1978, an experimental and feminist film noir during which, through voice-over, an investigation into the grammar of gaze and language is developed. .

In the artist's production, the work of writing maintains a poetic relationship with the presence of the text in its material, handwritten or typographical consistency.

Selected Works by Dominic Angerame

Dominic Angerame's works search for unfamiliar views of seemingly familiar things: cities, landscapes, faces and bodies. He has taught at several schools and served as the Executive Director of Canyon Cinema from 1980 to 2012. The following films will be presented: Continuum (1985), Revelations (2019), Have Another Expresso (2020), Flashbacks (2021), Khorosho (2022), Prometheus (2021) and Luminae (2022).

Live music by Kevin Barnard.

The New Film Underground: Open Screening

Want a truly unique movie going experience? At the NFU Open Screening anyone who shows up and pays admission can show their short film (10 min. or less). It can be experimental or narrative, horror, comedy, ANYTHING! We'll show an hour of films with brief statements from the filmmakers. We'll also have popcorn and water (BYOB). Los Angeles Filmforum, Hello Benjamin Films, Canyon Cinema, and the California African-American Museum present New Black Wave, Vol. 2

New Black Wave showcases films by Black filmmakers that push cinema's conceptual and aesthetic boundaries to explore deep-rooted emotions within the African Diaspora. Back for its second edition, the films in New Black Wave Vol. 2 remix public and personal archives to reveal new meanings within familiar images of Black life in America. We bear witness to the absolute and overwhelming freedom exhibited in Black expression and the ever-present power of Black culture. The show features brilliant films by Michèle Stephenson and Imani Dennison, Julie Dash, Ja'Tovia Gary, Paige Taul, Jenn Nkiru, Moïse Togo, and Darol Olu Kae. The screening will be followed by a discussion with filmmakers and curator and writer Taylor Renee Aldridge of the California African American Museum (CAAM).

After a two-year break LaborBerlin is looking forward to presenting a new edition of DIFFRAKTION, highlighting works from the Artist Film Workshop (AFW) of Melbourne, Australia, as well as the newest works from LaborBerlin members.

From Melbourne, filmmaker Lucas Haynes will be present, as along with most of the filmmakers from the LaborBerlin program. Florian Wüst, film curator, will guide through the evening.
