"Monastero dei folli" is a new journal by altriformati dedicated to writings, thoughts and images arising from experimental cinema and the visual arts. It is not a critical publication in the traditional sense, but a space where diverse materials are brought together to explore what happens when images, works and ideas begin to engage in dialogue with one another.
Issue zero is entitled "Complot film" and stems from a seemingly simple question. When we think of experimental cinema, we often imagine it without a narrative, without characters, without a plot – but is that really the case? What if the plot were hidden within the images themselves?
At the heart of this issue lies the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Probably one of the most observed, analysed and reinterpreted events of the twentieth century. More than a historical fact, it has become an inexhaustible archive of images, stories and hypotheses. A place where the desire to understand is constantly transformed into new narratives.
Kennedy’s assassination thus becomes the vanishing point of a constellation of films, texts and figures – Bruce Conner, Paolo Gioli, William E. Jones, Cormac McCarthy – who continue to question our need to find meaning in images and to construct, from them, new plots.
