This book is volume 2 in a series collecting the writing of Toshio Matsumoto, Japan’s most prominent experimental film directors. It contains 123 texts written between 1966 and 1971. In volume 1, which covered the 1950-1960s, Matsumoto confronted the political tendencies of the leftist documentary film movement. In contrast, the late 1960s, as covered in this volume, was a period in which Matsumoto experienced the dissolution of the cinema movement to which he had devoted himself, throwing himself into the chaos of the era. Matsumoto found in prelogical visual expression the potential to transform the relationship between the world and the self. He crossed boundaries, engaging in experimental film, narrative cinema, and intermedia. He was also involved in the Film Art Festival Tokyo (1968-1969) and the publication of Quarterly Film (1968-1972). Undoubtedly, this turbulent era marked the peak of his creative energy.
