  • Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure

Aberration of Light: Dark Chamber Disclosure is a site-specific live projection performance that was a highlight of this year’s festival (36th Toronto International Film Festival). In the projection booth, Brooklyn-based artists Sandra Gibson and Luís Recoder distilled a found 35mm commercial film print into rich, gorgeous beams of light that danced on the screen, the auditorium walls, and the faces of the rapt, dreamy spectators who filled the theater at the Ontario Gallery of Art. (The movie that was the basis for the work was never identified to the audience, and the artists have never watched it in its entirety.) The introductory movement of the piece is a marvel: tiny lines of white light that were movie credits in a past life shimmer onscreen like sunlight filtering through deep water. Occasionally a half-glimpsed face from the original film surfaces deep within the piece like a mirage in the desert; other moments resemble flashlights dancing through fog. The audio to the piece, created and mixed live in the theater by the Dallas-born contemporary composer Olivia Block, is at once organic and otherworldly. In addition to sounds produced digitally and musically, Block works with sounds she has collected from the world around her. Occasionally, these feel familiar: is that the sound of rushing water? Peeper frogs chirping on a summer night? The plaintive bleat of an alarm? The whir of an airplane about to take off? The pop of distant fireworks? Together, the visual and aural components of Aberration of Light are a symphony of lights and darks, quiets and louds, that are greater in concert then the sum of their parts.” (Livia Bloom, Filmmaker Magazine)

  • AI Split Editions #1: Hollis Frampton, A Lecture/Bruce Mcclure, Know Thy Instrument

Atelier Impopulaire Split #1 consists of an original text by Bruce McClure, an architect and performer based in New York. It is titled Know Thy Instrument, and based on a lecture given by Hollis Frampton on 30 October 1968, then published as A Lecture. Both with his text and projection performance, McClure aims at reflecting upon the body/technology dynamics, the relation with the whole projection apparatus, and the implications deriving from the removal of some of its parts. This all results in a modification of its mechanical structure, thus provoking a systemic abstraction of the obscurity/light duality in the guise of sound patterns.

  • Joseph Cornell Versus Cinema

Joseph Cornell is one of the most significant American artists of the twentieth century. His work is highly visible in the the world's most prestigious galleries, including the Tate Modern and MOMA. His famous boxes and his collage work have been admired and widely studied.

However, Cornell also produced an extraordinary body of film work, a serious contribution to 20th-century avant-garde cinema, and this has been much less examined.

  • Flesh Cinema: The Corporeal Turn in American Avant-Garde Film

Flesh Cinema: The Corporeal Turn in American Avant-Garde Film explores the groundbreaking representation of the body in experimental films of the 1960s and 1970s. Focusing on sexually explicit films by Andy Warhol, Barbara Rubin, Stan Brakhage, Carolee Schneemann, Yoko Ono and Paul Sharits, this book demonstrates how experimental cinema not only transformed American visual culture, but also the lives of those who created it. By situating these films in relation to the civil rights and sexual liberation movements, Flesh Cinema investigates how social politics continue to inform their meaning.

  • Instants

Instants encompasses a new film by the Swiss artist Hannes Schüpbach and a literary text by the French archeologist and writer Joël-Claude Meffre. The artistic project and the publication that was created for it, with an essay by Marco Baschera (“Thinking in Images”), are devoted to a central point of convergence of the arts: the INSTANT. In photography, film, or literature, the instant in its “entrance” or “descent” signifies a performative opening in the sequence of time that radically breaks through any concept of linearity.

  • Martina Kudláček - Fragments of Kubelka

This epic documentary subtly introduces the complex world view of iconic filmmaker and theoretician Peter Kubelka (born 1934, Vienna). While Kubelka's radical and pioneering body of films is a highly condensed work of about an hour focussing on the essence of cinema, his legendary lectures often unfold over many hours. These lectures on "what is cinema" and "cooking as an art form" are frequently illuminated by the presentation of archaeological objects from Kubelka's eclectic collection. He considers his ongoing collecting to be an expanded film practice which explores the evolution of humanity. Martina Kudlácek has carefully woven an open-ended portrait which goes beyond the biographical to reveal fresh insights into the phenomenon of film.

  • Speaking Directly: Oral Histories of the Moving Image

While known primarily as an exhibitor of artist-made films, San Francisco Cinematheque has, throughout its history, created opportunities for talking and writing about the challenging and lively work that it showcases. Cinematheque's “occasional” journal Cinematograph is back, after a long hiatus, with an illuminating book-length issue, comprised of extensive conversations with filmmakers, artists, curators, and scholars. Titled Cinematograph 7: Speaking Directly—Oral Histories of the Moving Image, it presents recent discussions with Coleen Fitzgibbon, Narcisa Hirsch, Jim Jennings, Chris Kennedy, Kerry Laitala, Annette Michelson, Tomonari Nishikawa, Elizabeth Price, Ben Rivers and Kidlat Tahimik. Interviewers include Erika Balsom, Kathy Geritz, Sandra Gibson, Aily Nash, Luis Recoder, Lucy Reynolds, Jonathan Walley and Mark Webber. The issue also has never-before-published excerpts from Q&A sessions with Peter Hutton, George Kuchar, Owen Land and Warren Sonbert, drawn from Cinematheque's archive of historical artifacts and documentation.

  • Ernst Schmidt Jr. - Stones & 20 Action and Destruction Films

If I had to name a single Austrian filmmaker who to this day has not received the international recognition deserved for the artistic level his work attained, I would unhesitatingly name him. When he died in 1988 at the early age of 50, Ernst Schmidt Jr. left behind a body of work that could hardly be more multifaceted, including experimental documentary films, material films, expanded cinema, abstract films, project films, conceptual films, Lettrist text films, compilation films, and a feature length dramatic film. The catalogue of a posthumous exhibit at the Vienna Secession in 2001 and his home page (initiated and maintained by his half brother Helmut Benedikt) encompasses close to 100 works. In 1980 Schmidt Jr. drew from this abundance to create a compilation of films entitled 20 Aktions- und Destruktionsfilme 1965-1979. This compilation is now available for the first time on DVD. • Nicky Hamlyn - Selected Works 1974-2012

Nicky Hamlyn is one of the UK's key artist filmmakers of the past 30 years, working in 16mm film and video, he has produced a large body of both single screen work and installations in both media. His current practice has two distinct concerns, based on the medium he is using. In much of the film work he has been concerned with developing structures that are derived as closely as possible from the form of the subject matter. In recent years the subjects have been predominantly architectural, but also topographical. He often works frame by frame, in the manner of an animator, and this approach acknowledges the importance of the individual frame as a building block for bigger structures. The aim in establishing a reciprocal relationship between the film frame, the framing edges and the subject’s formal properties, is to eliminate subjective decisions about framing and allow given parameters to have a determining effect. Much of the video work, by contrast, explores the spontaneous interactions between complex events, such as the swirling movements of layers of net curtain, and the  video technology used to record process the data it receives. This DVD makes available for the first time his major film and video works from the past 38 years and is accompanied by new essays by Simon Payne and Federico Windhausen.
