Welcome to a screening with the Basel-based filmmaker and artist Hannes Schüpbach. Since the 1990’s, Schüpbach has created a dynamic work focusing on the fine-calibrated changes of the gestures, landscapes, bodies and light. In his 16mm films, we often encounter a peculiar movement between spontaneity, intimacy and a progestically fragmented work in which, as he expressed it—the “the surroundings meet the eye” — crystallizes a form that is unmistakable Schüpbachsk.
Schüpbach's works are textured, and volatile gestures, snapshots, reproductions of objects, architectural structures, flora and fauna, upbeat unseen correspondences, constellations and new poetic facts. As much as it is a constant change, the processes of memory are activated here; the film becomes a medium for articulating and redefining the “representation of time and movement and the complex processes of experiencing and remembering.” The program spans the early Portrait Mariage (2000) to Schüpbach's latest film, Essais, from 2020.
