✸ Acts of Rupture: Portuguese Artists’ Cinema on the Eve of the Revolution ✸

► Following the Cinemateca Portuguesa’s in-depth series of screenings devoted to the rich yet still little-known Portuguese experimental cinema of the 1960s and 1970s, this unique program highlights works that, whether directly or indirectly, embody the spirit of the Carnation Revolution and engage in dialogue with the revolutionary era.

Ana Hatherly, Carlos Calvet, Luís Noronha da Costa, António Palolo, and Fernando Calhau are among the Portuguese artists of this period who turned to cinema as an extension of their explorations in painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and performance, or at the crossroads of these disciplines. Straddling the line between “artist films” and “amateur films”, often shot in small formats (Super 8 and 8mm, and occasionally 16mm), this program reveals the boundless possibilities of a free cinema: one in which rupture becomes a creative force, artistic production is inseparable from everyday life, and the manipulation of images and sounds opens up new realms of experience.

Copies digitized by the Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema within the framework of the Recovery and Resilience Plan / Next Generation EU program.

Screening introduced by Joana Ascensão (curator of the cycle Cinema Experimental Português: O cinema dos Artistas, Anos 60 e 70 at the Cinemateca Portuguesa), followed by a discussion with Mickaël Robert-Gonçalves (PhD in Film Studies and author of Le cinéma portugais en révolution 1974-1982).
