This April, we warmly invite you to come and see Els van Riel’s films.

Els van Riel’s films do not attempt to tell a story. The focus is on light, time, movement and cinematic technique. Els van Riel is an observer; she observes closely .However, she also allows the audience to participate in this process. She describes her filmmaking approach as “radical attention”. If you give even the most ordinary thing enough time, you rediscover it. This is why films should be understood as both patient research and creations. For Els van Riel, the film camera does not merely reflect reality; it helps to shape it. Thus, a white, overexposed image becomes definable as the filmmaker slowly closes the aperture. It is often the lighting conditions themselves that cause our surroundings to take on a poetic, (a)significant existence. Els van Riel likes to move along this threshold.
