‘An August Note’ (2024) and ‘We Were No Strangers’ (2024) are two films connected by elsewhere. Doubtful and distracted narrators chase down stories, leading us inexorably to their pasts. Shot in Portugal and Finland respectively, this will be the first time both films are screened in the UK.

- Rebecca Stenfors, ‘We Were No Strangers’, 2024
In ‘We Were No Strangers’ we embark on a drive that takes us backwards. Through the film, a portrait of an unseen relative shot with a camera strapped to the back of a bicycle, we trace the lines of an internal map; constructing a situation of familiarity as the route repeats and folds back on itself. A circling narration from a diary entry recalls a conversation layered with (mis)rememberings of how things actually took place. Coupled with our monotonous cruising, this voice places us in the strange enchanting loop of being stuck in a memory of the past.

Rebecca Stenfors is an artist, writer and filmmaker based in London. Making use of porous, diaristic narratives that explore family memory and intimacy, whilst all the while flirting with the idea of homecoming, her stories play out at a distance, where nostalgia may allow for a chosen fiction to grow.

- Tom Connell Wilson, 'An August Note', 2024
'An August Note' traces the act of looking for something elusive. A fractured, intermittent narrative anchors the work, beginning with the discovery of an e-mail containing hundreds of files and a singular note from an unnamed sender. As the film unfolds, we are witness to the contents of the files; inspecting clues that speculate the filmmaker’s whereabouts, the supposed missing films, their past life and methodology. These we absorb, confronted by a narration that leads us on a detoured journey, arcing through memories, fables, observations of the city and a fractured, conjectural analysis of the filmmaker’s fate.

Tom Connell Wilson is an artist, writer and filmmaker based in London. His work interrogates the intersections between memory and landscape, reimagining sites through the retelling of speculative narratives.
