Founded by filmmaker Bruce Baillie in 1961, San Francisco Cinematheque is the Bay Area’s premier venue for avant-garde/experimental, underground and personally expressive film, video and media performance, inspiring aesthetic dialog among artists, stimulating critical discourse, and encouraging appreciation of artist-made cinema across the broader cultural landscape.

CROSSROADS 2024 is the 15th manifestation of Cinematheque's annual film festival. CROSSROADS 2024 consists of 10 programs featuring 75 works of film and video by 68 artists representing 19 countries and territories. Cinematheque is proud to announce that, of these 75 featured artists, 28 are receiving their CROSSROADS debut this year.

As usual, CROSSROADS 2024 is replete with works from well-known filmmakers and “new discoveries.” Major themes of this year’s festival include considerations of personal and collective history in the context of global politics; accountings of urban and natural landscape in the Anthropocene era; contemplations of erotics, isolation and identity in an increasingly virtualized world; and the status of myth in contemporary culture.

Highlights of the festival include a bittersweet portrait of the late San Francisco Art Institute by long-time San Francisco filmmaker Dominic Angerame, a poignant consideration of the poetry of VietNam War veteran Yusef Komunyakaa by Morgan Quaintance; elaborate experimental docs and essay films by Mary Helena Clark, Ross Meckfessel and Parinda Mai and major works of experimental cinema by 68 contemporary artists.
