Melissa Dullius and Gustavo Jahn have been working with analog film since 1999. Both originally from Brazil, moved to Berlin in 2006 and started working together under the name "Distruktur”. Their films, mostly shot on 16mm, combine both fiction and personal archive, as well as observation and symbolic staging. In addition to the DIY approach to the production of their work, the actual projection is often accompanied by music or performance and also plays an important role in Distruktur’s artistic work.
“In order to see things as they really are you also need to reorganize them, play with them, and infuse yourself with a certain amount of fantasy. We make films to learn more about the world, about ourselves, and, if we do it well, others will also discover new perspectives on the world and themselves.”
Melissa and Gustavo are also founding members of the artist-run film lab LaborBerlin.
As part of our last Film on Film event of the year, Melissa Dullius will show a retrospective of Distruktur's work on Sunday, December 8th. Afterwards, there will be an open discussion about their analog working methods and cinematic-artistic approaches.
The evening-long program will feature both digital and analog projections.
