This selection of films considers the act of recovery as a way of restoring lost and invisible things.Selected by filmmaker Matthew Berka, this program combines historical and contemporary film works that variously question materialist views of the world. In these films, the tension between presence and absence plays out as a central, yet unresolved drama. Outtakes from Jean Cocteau ‘Orphée’ (1950) appear, apparition-like, a lost reel assembled from the floor of the editor, the death of a husband is recounted in a mournful chant, reminiscent of buddhist prayer, the presence of the book and the reader, evoked through words and images is as real as matter, a skull made of translucent glass; the everlasting colour-patterns of the spirit.
