At Filmhuis Cavia we are always happy when we can bring the magic of 16mm back to our cinema. This time we are even more excited, as we will be hosting New York-based artist and filmmaker Ryan Marino with his suitcase full of 16mm prints! Having coupled up with wysiwyg in Den Haag to bring Ryan over the Atlantic, we will be screening a retrospective of his work carefully curated by our partners of wysiwyg. The author will be present in the cinema to play his own prints.

A meditation on the passage of time and light, an evocation of the season of autumn.

Amid the arboreal giants and temperate organisms of a primeval rain forest lurks an elusive luminous force.
- Radiant Forms (2022, 16mm, color, sound, 7’)
Luminous forms merging in time.
- Obscured in Soft Light (2025, 16mm, color, sound, 8’)
Filmed over several months during the evening hours while all was quiet, the film explores the nocturnal resonances and traces of domesticity left dormant amid the stillness of night.
- The Visible Material (2024, 16mm, color, sound, 8’)
Through means of rephotography and refracted projection, the movements and luminescent surfaces of Berlin’s Alexanderplatz are transformed into vibrant fields of moving color.
- Half Light (2023, 16mm, color, sound, 10’)
Shot over a period of three years in a single interior space, this film explores sensory perception through the textural surface of expired film stock, light and layered images. Ephemeral moments meld into voids of grain.
- Aura of Uncertainty (2016, 16mm, color, sound, 6’)
Ominous passages of time and light provide a fleeting glimpse into the unknown.
Ryan Marino is a New York–based artist working with film and sound.
