Visual Studies Workshop presents Monster in Me: Video Work by Cecelia Condit, a screening of works from across the four decade career of video artist Cecelia Condit. Her experimental videos are deeply personal, dense with texture, and threaded with wry humor as they explore themes of feminist horror. These videos connect surreal dream spaces to the real, waking world, commenting on everyday cycles of violence.

Condit's 1983 video Possibly in Michigan recently received a wide recirculation on social media, inspiring new audiences to engage with her unique blend of visceral terror and resilient humor. Condit will be at VSW for conversation after the screening, which will include her most recent video, Monster in Me.

This event is presented in conjunction with Project Space Resident Sabine Gruffat's Open Studio, 6-9pm

COST: $10, Free for VSW Members

About the Artist: Since 1981, Cecelia Condit's videos have created heroines whose lives swing between beauty and the grotesque, innocence and cruelty, youth and fragility. Her work puts a subversive spin on the traditional mythology of women in film and the psychology of sexuality and violence. Exploring the dark side of female subjectivity, her "feminist fairy tales" focus on friendships, age, and the natural world. She has shown internationally in festivals, museums and alternative spaces, and is represented in collections including the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Museum of Modern Art in NYC and the Centre Georges Pompidou Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris, France. In 2025, she received the Anonymous Was A Woman award (AWAW – 2025) and, in 2024, the Stan Brakhage Vision Award for expanding the boundaries of personal cinema. She has received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, American Film Institute, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Mary L. Nohl Foundation and numerous film festivals in the USA and internationally. She's a professor emerita in the Department of Film, Video, Animation & New Genres at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she was the director of the graduate program in film for 30 years. She currently lives in Minnesota.

About Visual Studies Workshop: Visual Studies Workshop nurtures experimental and expansive approaches to photography and media arts, and builds community among artists and the public through exhibitions, publications and residencies. We envision a society that values the human need to create and share ideas. VSW was founded in 1969 in Rochester, NY by photographer, educator and curator Nathan Lyons (1930–2016), and became one of the earliest independent, not-for-profit, artist-run spaces in the country. More than 50 years later, the organization's mission is reflected in its core programs: VSW public programs and exhibitions, Project Space artist residencies, and VSW publications and workshops. In support of VSW programs, the organization holds substantial photography and moving image research collections and an art library for artists, critics and the general public to explore, research and reuse. vsw.org
