For the sixth edition of Novembre Expérimental, Cinédoc Paris Films Coop presents, for the first time in France, a complete retrospective of the films of Pat O’Neill. An essential figure in American experimental cinema and master of the optical printer, Pat O’Neill has, since the 1960s, created a unique body of films that expand the multiple registers and perceptual dimensions of cinema. Through his radical and critical assemblages, “at the very periphery of industrial entertainment” – as his business card put it – the artist plays with film history and codes, transforming the Californian experience and imaginary into a fragmented, visionary, hallucinatory territory.
His creations have been showcased in institutions like Tate Modern, Art Basel, and the Centre Pompidou, but never before in Europe has there been such an opportunity to fully immerse oneself in his complete filmography. From his early short films in 16mm to the monumental Water and Power and The Decay of Fiction in 35mm, and including his astonishing uses of digital technology as well as some of his previously unseen essays, the Novembre Expérimental #6 program offers a chance to (re)discover more than forty works, through which Pat O’Neill explores “the trouble in the images.”
