Screening in the presence of the filmmaker
The little Super 8 camera is my instrument for setting down on film my vision of the surrounding world. Camera in hand and eye against the viewfinder, I discover and let myself be surprised by the patterns, images, movements, and rhythms that I capture on the fly, in-camera. Shot after shot, a film lasting no more than 3 minutes and 20 seconds takes shape. I try to find technical and formal decisions that correspond to what inspires and intrigues me. Photochemical film preserves the intensity of perception and emotion, as well as one’s concentration on the temporal and rhythmic structure at the moment of filming. There is no subsequent editing. Either I consider a film successful and can share it with the public, or it is not shown.
For each screening, I compose a different program from a selection of films – a kind of ephemeral “film” with a length of 50 to 60 minutes. It is a dense yet airy fabric of correspondences and contrasts between themes, colors, rhythms, and textures. Combined with the others, each film lends itself to a new view and understanding.
Super 8 is a small-gauge format. It requires a more intimate setting than a large movie theater. This is why my films are projected from the screening room and not from the booth. They are not silent. You can hear the noise of the projector and see me operating it. The act of projecting becomes visible. I also prefer to project 16mm blow-up prints this way.
