《From Your Mouth to Our Ears》+《Films About Lynne Sachs Who》

At Sorigrim, we present a program of performance, screenings, and conversation exploring the work of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. In From Your Mouth to Our Ears, Lynne Sachs and Sujin Lee explore memory, language, and history as ways of connecting with others. In collaboration with the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), we will screen Cha's work. Through performance and conversation, Sachs and Lee rearticulate Cha's work through the language and experiences of the present.

Program 6 brings together films that reveal the poetic dimensions of Lynne Sachs's work. Rather than explain the world, Sachs's films carefully compose a sensory encounter with it. A person's gaze and body, light beyond a window, the surface of an object, and brief everyday gestures come into relation within her films. This program follows the delicate rhythms formed between image and sound, silence and language.

From early works such as <Ladies Wear> and <Following the Object to Its Logical Beginning> to the recent <She Carries the Holiday in Her Eyes> and <Girl in a Daunting Now>, presented with a live performance, Sachs does not leave the reality captured by her camera as a fixed scene. In her films, reality continually shifts into other forms through memory and observation, imagination and literary language. Objects become extensions of the body; landscapes hold history and affect; and an individual face connects with a wider field of memory beyond personal time.

Works including <Window Work>, <Sound of a Shadow>, and <Georgic for a Forgotten Planet> reveal moments when this cinematic language expands into broader terrains of time and space. Moving between a close, attentive gaze and a distant view, Lynne Sachs's camera captures relationships that have not yet been fully held in language. This screening offers an opportunity to experience how cinema can become more than a medium for telling stories: a poetic act of reading and feeling the world anew. (Kim Ji-hwan)
