Canyon Cinema Membership Meeting at Film Arts Foundation, San Francisco, 1994

Per Jeffrey Skoller, Canyon board member: "I don’t remember the date of the meeting but I remember the subject. A general meeting was called for the first time in 10 years, because the Board wanted to discuss allowing video and video makers into the co-op. The reasons were briefly articulated by Jack Walsh in the video. We felt that with the changing technology and the increasing expense of 16mm, more and filmmakers were using video, and especially younger makers. More and more the established filmmakers were turning to video--like George Kuchar for one, who had stopped shooting on film, and couldn’t distribute his recent work through Canyon even though he was one of the most well known members. If Canyon didn’t keep up with the changing technologies, it would become increasingly irrelevant. We wanted to present that to the membership and start a conversation about changing the rules. Bruce Conner was vehemently opposed to allowing video and video makers into the co-op, and mobilized many of the older artists to oppose it. He started his own campaign among the membership to oppose video and his lawyer (seen by his side in the video you recorded) found the proxy rule in the bylaws, and gathered 40 or so proxy votes and came to the meeting to make sure that he could overturn the video motion should it come to a vote. So the first part of the meeting that you taped was Bruce using the controversy around the proxy rule to make sure that the meeting never got to video, and he made sure he wasn’t going to let the meeting move forward until he was allowed to be the proxy for all the people who gave it to him. I made a motion to adjourn the official meeting so we could proceed with the discussion of video informally. It was seconded and voted on. The discussion about allowing video into Canyon went on. It would have been great if that had been recorded. Ultimately Bruce withdrew his films from Canyon, and got others to do so as well and blackmailed the co-op with lost revenue. Dominic sided with Bruce and the others to get them to bring their films back, and it was another decade before video was allowed into the collection other than filmmakers selling video copies of their films. Anyway that's my memory of that night. There were other memories like Stan Brakhage calling me up at 6 in the morning and accusing me of trying to destroy Canyon by allowing video and the video makers would run rampant over Canyon…"

Addenda: Meeting was held in 1994, not 1986. *Additional people who were there but are not listed on the video titles: Nathaniel (Nick) Dorsky, *Leslie Alpert's last name is wrong; her last name is Alperin.
