INDEX Edition 054 is dedicated to a particular group of works from the oeuvre of the major U.S. experimental filmmaker Phil Solomon (1954–2019), namely the trilogy In Memoriam (Mark LaPore), which Solomon – like its predecessor Crossroads –“distilled” from the video game Grand Theft Auto, as well as his two final works, Psalm IV: Valley of the Shadow and The Emblazoned Apparitions.
In depth articles pay tribute to and contextualize the artist and his (digital) films, authored by filmmaker Eve Heller – Solomon's lifelong friend who co-founded The Phil Solomon Project upon inheriting Solomon's artistic legacy in 2019 –and John Powers, film and media scholar, whose numerous publications include his book Technology and the Making of Experimental Film Culture, 2023.
With STILL RAINING, STILL DREAMING these works are, for the first time, made accessible to both long-standing and new audiences in the form of downloads for home viewing.
Phil Solomon was a pioneering filmmaker who created works of singular poetic depth, wordlessly mapping the uncanny, conjuring otherworldly beauty, poignant struggle, sentient being – time and space tenderly turned outside in. His internationally acclaimed body of work spanned 45 years and was dedicated to a medium-specific exploration of film as art – a pursuit characteristic of avant-garde tradition.
