Albert Alcoz (b.Barcelona, 1979) has a Fine Arts degree from the University of Barcelona and a Master on Creative Documentary Cinema and a Doctorate on Cinematographic Theory, Analysis and Documentation by the Pompeu Fabra University. He has published many articles on film and contemporary art in magazines such as Archivos de la Filmoteca, Secuencias or the cultural supplement Cultura/s of the spanish newspaper La Vanguardia. He has written the essays The cinema of Craig Baldwin.

  • Xcèntric: Noise and soundscape in structural film

    Sound in cinema is a key element to understanding the authors' artistic conception. This is a session specially designed to learn a bit more about the different roles of the soundtrack in the structural film.

    The filmmakers who practise the technical and aesthetic considerations of structural film work with sound from disruptive stances. Graphic manipulations on the optical soundtrack of the celluloid and alterations to ambient sound offer acoustic dialogues about noise and soundscape.

    Los Angeles Filmforum presents The Festival of (In)appropriation #8

    Whether you call it collage, compilation, found footage, détournement, or recycled cinema, the incorporation of already existing media into new artworks is a practice that generates novel juxtapositions and new meanings and ideas, often in ways entirely unrelated to the intentions of the original makers. Such new works are, in other words, “inappropriate.” This act of (in)appropriation may even produce revelations about the relationship between past and present, here and there, intention and subversion, artist and critic, not to mention the "producer" and "consumer" of visual culture itself. Fortunately for our purposes, the past decade has witnessed the emergence of a wealth of new audiovisual elements available for appropriation into new works. In addition to official state and commercial archives, resources like vernacular collections, home movie repositories, and digital archives now also provide fascinating material to repurpose in ways that lend it new meaning and resonance.

    On the evening of Thursday, November 26 the works of Klara Ravat and the OJOBOCA collective will be screened at the facilities in the Goethe Institut of Barcelona. This activity advertised with the explicit title of Experimental analogue film projections is part of the activities organized on the occasion of the sixty years of the Goethe Institut in Barcelona. Klara Ravat presents a selection of works on film (super 8 and 16 mm) ranging from collage of abstract forms to impressionism with a feminist background, passing through both visual and olfactory perceptual games. Anja Dornieden and Juan David Gonzalez Monroy, from OJOBOCA will offer a set of films that are born from filmic experimentation, implemented by hand during the filming and developing processes, to propose a session entitled Horrorism for beginners, beginners for horrorism, revealing participatory psychological concerns.

    Filmadrid International Film Festival (June 5-13, Madrid) is a newborn festival with the "determination to discover new paths in the landscape of contemporary cinematography". And as such, in its very first edition, presents a very strong commitment with experimental cinema. Eighteen works, feature and short films, will participate in the avant-garde competition, including pieces by Basma Alsharif, Laida Lertxundi,  Juan Daniel F. Molero, Pablo Marín and Aura Satz, among others. Four 'guest programmes' complement the avant-garde section, featuring a series of animated non-fiction shorts curated by Elena Duque ('The missing image'); a programme curated by Albert Alcoz & Alberto Cabrera Bernal, filmmakers and editors of the Angular DVD label, who will also present its first release; a session dedicated to veteran filmmaker Adolpho Arrietta; and a series of works on the poems of Galician poet Xosé María Díaz Castro titled 'Proxecto Nimbos'. The Vanguardias Live section challenges several artists to create performative works in ways that they haven't thought of/worked with before; this edition will include performances by Juan Barrero, Lois Patiño and Salomé Lamas.

  • Found Footage Magazine

    Found Footage Magazine is an independent semi-annual publication distributed worldwide and printed both in English and Spanish, offering theoretical, analytical and informative contents related to found footage filmmaking. The contents for the first issue, to be released on October 2015, include the extensive monograph on Bill Morrison, 'A Poetic Archaeology of Cinema', by Matt Levine, plus an interview with the filmmaker; essays on the 'ethics of appropriation', and the work of Martin Arnold, Peter Tscherkassky and Santiago Álvarez. The issue also features several articles, including a recount of the most recent edition Festival of (In)appropiation by its director Jaimie Baron, and reviews of contemporary works and recently published books on found footage films.

  • From found footage to lyrical film

    Microscope Gallery is very pleased to welcome Spanish filmmaker Albert Alcoz to the gallery for the first time in person for a solo screening of his new and recent film works including manipulated found footage works and original Super 8mm. Alcoz’s appropriations – a B-movie Sci-Fi feature, home movies, a series of soda ads, and a classic World War II documentary – have been transformed in format and material, with several involving chemical dissolutions to distort the original photographic textures. The artist’s original Super 8 films (all shot in camera, some in color and others in b&w) offer silent impressions and accelerations of the cities and natural environments around him.

    Impartido por Alberto Cabrera Bernal y Albert Alcoz.

    Dirigido a cualquier persona interesada en el cine de apropiación y en el manipulado del soporte cinematográfico en diversos formatos, Súper 8, 16 mm y 35 mm. Contextualización histórica y conceptual de dichas prácticas. Aproximación al trabajo de cineastas dentro de la disciplina con proyecciones escogidas. Actividad de los alumnos desarrollada en 16 mm y exhibición de los resultados.

    Módulo teórico:
    Introducción al 16 mm. Breve recorrido histórico del formato en el cine de vanguardia, el cine underground y el cine experimental internacional más reciente. Explicaciones de tendencias cinematográficas, cineastas y técnicas fílmicas vinculadas al desmontaje del found footage y a la fisicidad del cine matérico. Acercamiento al cine de metraje encontrado de vocación estructural. Visionados y explicaciones de trabajos fílmicos de realizadores como Hollis Frampton, Thomas Draschan, Jennifer Reeves y otros.

    Módulo práctico:
    Realización de una pieza colectiva en 16mm a base de fragmentos breves editados bajo consideraciones sistemáticas, manipulados físicamente, atendiendo a cuestiones plásticas herederas del collage. Se terminará también el módulo enseñando el rollo original de alguno de los trabajos de los profesores.
