IFI & AEMI Projections: Films By Peggy Ahwesh and Julie Murray

By Marcos Ortega on Mon, 12/06/2017 - 16:57

AEMI and IFI present the film and video work of Peggy Ahwesh and Julie Murray. The programme examines the distinct and overlapping interests of two significant filmmakers, both of whom will be in attendance for the screening.

Over several decades of practice Peggy Ahwesh has created one of the more heterogeneous bodies of work in the pantheon of experimental cinema. From early films shot on Super8 to recent forays into digital animation, Ahwesh’s work powerfully addresses questions of feminism, cultural identity and performance.

Troubling the Image: Landscapes of Light

By Marcos Ortega on Thu, 16/02/2017 - 15:17

The five-program series "Troubling the Image: New + Restored Experimental Cinema" features an eclectic and wide-ranging group of works that celebrate the vibrancy of experimental and almost-experimental cinema from near and far, now and then.

Landscapes of Light features works about place that alternate between close observations of the everyday and more expansive and dislocated views of the world. This program is anchored by two beautiful films by Dane Komljen, Our Body (2015) and All Still Orbit (2016; co-directed by James Lattimer), that imbue place with tenuous histories, personal and political. Arash Nassiri’s Tehran-geles (2015) is a nocturnal flight around the buildings of Tehran, a disorienting view of lights, commercial structures, and signage that could double for Times Square or Las Vegas. Also showing are Peter Hutton’s Boston Fire (1979), Julie Murray’s Distance (2010) and Joana Pimenta’s An Aviation Field (2016). Onscreen preshow is Lois Patiño’s video Strata of the Image (2015).

La Vidéoshop

By Marcos Ortega on Mon, 08/06/2015 - 12:21

La Vidéoshop is the first and last store in a video rental chain that will never stretch from North America to France. La Vidéoshop will offer videos that you can’t find at a video shop. Avant-garde, anti-commercial, and DIY. La Vidéoshop will be located in a space that we can’t afford (Do you have any idea how much it costs to rent this place?). La Vidéoshop doesn’t sell anything. We don’t charge admission to the nightly screenings. Even the wine is free. Our business model is fatally flawed. La Vidéoshop won’t last. Enquire within for franchising opportunities. One day, there won’t be a Vidéoshop near you.

Dates:
Thursday, June 18, 2015 (All day) to Tuesday, June 30, 2015 (All day)
