Kurt Kren: Structural Films - Screening and Book Launch

Kurt Kren was a vital figure in Austrian avant-garde cinema of the post-war period. His structural films, often shot frame-by-frame following elaborately pre-scored charts and diagrams, have influenced filmmakers for decades, even as Kren himself has remained a nomadic and obscure public figure. Kurt Kren: Structural Films, edited by Nicky Hamlyn, Simon Payne, and A. L. Rees, brings together interviews with Kren, film scores, and classic out-of-print essays alongside the reflections of contemporary academics and filmmakers, to add much-needed critical discussion of Kren’s legacy. Taken together, the collection challenges the canonical view of Kren that ignores his underground lineage and powerful, lyrical imagery.

The Bleeping Light: Explorative Sensoriums In Experimental Film & Video

The Bleeping Light features artists who delve into cracked phenomena and psychological perceptions, synaesthetic slippage and hacked technologies to produce works which inhabit a space between waveform and frame. Included are audiovisual works by sound artists who explore the role of a ‘seeing ear’, and sonic explorations by filmmakers who by the act of performance and intervention derive a sonorous space. Appropriated for single channel presentation many of these works exist in an environment which challenges the flat confines of the screen, and have their origins and inspirations in sound art and performance – this is cinema which speaks directly to the viewer’s synapses. Curated for Off The Page by Sally Golding (OtherFilm, Unconscious Archives).

Presenting videos made by American and European artists, this program relates to Samuel Beckett's last work Stirrings Still at many levels: aesthetically, structurally, emotionally and metaphorically.

The terms stirring and still, which generally refer to movement and stillness, are combined together, a characteristic inherent in all moving-image art works.
Many of the selected videos center around structure and aesthetics, showing the interaction between moving and still elements, and exploring their reciprocal limits.
Other works involve the repetitions and obsessive self-reflection present in Beckett's writing. While others deal with at some level the sentiment of 'the end', the passing of time and our fate of being alone with our own existence.

The works will be displayed as a 70 minute looped program as part of the exhibition Project Birch Forest - Part 2, opening on August 19th through September 7th. (Andrea Monti)
