A tireless activist, Werner Nekes has been involved in a number of activities throughout his career: the production of a considerable number of films, the creation of the Hamburg Film Cooperative, the Filmbüro NW, the International Center for New Cinema, teaching in different universities and art schools, and the creation of one of the world's largest collections of objects related to pre-cinema and optical phenomena.

François Miron - Paul Sharits
A crucial figure in 1960s-70s avant-garde film, Paul Sharits was a pioneer of structuralist cinema, an approach to filmmaking that emphasizes and explores the formal dimensions and physical properties specific to the medium. A deeply committed and visionary artist, Sharits began exploring the potential of the single frame and the flicker effect in the mid-1960s, and continued to make many films that took as their subject the filmstrip itself.

By Marcos Ortega on Tue, 28/06/2016 - 09:47

Our celebration of the 50th anniversary of the London Filmmakers’ Co-operative continues with this evening programmed by Anna La Thew and Steve Farrer.

"Steve and I were elected at the 1980 AGM and a life long friendship began. The 1980's were the start of film-makers being actively encouraged to publicise, exhibit, distribute and courier Co-op films, in person, internationally. We were committed to the Co-operative as an act of romantic resistance, its manifesto, its openness, its freedom and a lot of us were from up North.

Gathering films, a round table and an installation the aim is to develop thought and decolonized perspectives about the current degradation state in the whole socio-enviromental context in which the showing occurs, the Pernambuco state in Brazil. The two programmes (Animal qualque(e)r & Cidade da Si/elva) articulate films from yann beauvais, Mike Hoolboom, Claudio Caldini, Duke and Battersby with women filmmakers like Cherry Kino, Juliana Dorneles, Rai Sacramento, Renata Claus and Carla Lombardo (installation) in order to create interconnections between gender, sexuality, nature and cultural dimensions.

Off off Art Cinema: 2x

By Anton Michels on Mon, 22/02/2016 - 16:15

During this presentation we show the legendary Outer and Inner Space by Andy Warhol in its original form, this means with two 16mm projectors and two screens. This epic work contains all the Warholian artistic elements: fame, the portrait, repetion, the reproduction of images... intertwined with Warhol's film work, which turns this film into a selfconscious performance, a homemade Warhol superstar that thus provides commentary on the star system itself. Edie Sedgwick sits next to a monitor that plays a video of her head, while she talks to herself.

The diversity of thought with cinema. Thus the text as an image, the relations between image and sound, are part of personal films with an autobiographical dimension. Themes such as the contemporary consumer society, advertising, representation of women and neocolonialism are the focus of several sessions. While others show the film in a situation where celluloid and video speak their differences through the film as sculpture. The issue of the media, placing film and video in different sites, ranging from theater to the gallery, will also be addressed in the sessions. The films will be screened with subtitles in Portuguese and those will be available for filmmakers, and / or distributors.
