Masterclass with Helga Fanderl

German filmmaker Helga Fanderl films her films in Super8, camera in hand, with no postproduction. She also carefully constructs her own programmes of screenings for each occasion and presents them in person. In this performative talk, she will explain in detail her filmic practice and illustrate it with a series of pieces that she will screen herself in Super8.

Pat O’Neill is an inspirational figure on the Los Angeles avant-garde film scene. Considered a master and innovator in his use of the optical printer, the unexpected compositions and cinematographic landscapes that make up his cinema are the fruit of his pioneering, virtuoso artisan work which, in contrast with the digital age, strongly reveals its visual and chromatic intensity.

Eight recent films, partially filmed in woodland, make up a session marked by Vertigo Rush. The progressive acceleration of the work by Austrian filmmaker Johann Lurf sets the pace for a series of films in which research into the technical options of the camera interacts with a profilmic forest setting.

Bruce Conner is noted for his transgressive, pioneering use of found footage, but he also made and edited films. His career provides an index of US counterculture attitudes, from the psychic experiments of the beat generation and hippies to the appropriations of punk rock. These two programmes, ranging from his first films to his latest digital projects, reaffirm Conner’s importance as a filmmaker who is both innovative and influential.
