This programme presents experimental short films that probe the subject of memory. How can film itself act as both witness and interpreter of what we recall? And how might the fragile materials and technologies of cinema mirror the fragility of memory itself?
Taken together, these films invite us to reflect on how memory is formed, lost, and reshaped, both on screen and in our own lives.
On Saturday, September 20th, at 7pm, you're invited to the Film-Makers' Cooperative (475 Park Avenue South, 6th Floor) for a 20-year retrospective of the work of Erica Schreiner. This program, co-curated by Schreiner and Matt McKinzie, will be followed by a Q&A with the artist. The Film Gallery is pleased to present Lynn Marie Kirby: Produits de France, the first solo show in France of the San Francisco-based artist and filmmaker.
Curated by Matt Feldman and Syd Farrington, In Our Sleep brings together the work of 8 artists for a screening of films presented on 16mm. The films offer a unique approach to 16mm filmmaking in their consideration of landscape, domestic space and media as a means of addressing notions of ‘Place’. Through reflections on light, magic, death and dreams, each film considers the importance of what remains unseen and beyond the surface of image.
As a member of the artist run film lab filmkoop wien, Stefanie Weberhofer is one of the driving forces behind the promotion of analog film culture in Austria. For more than a decade, she has been captivating audiences with her inventive, material-driven, and experimental works. This special showcase presents 17 of her films across two programs.
