  • Concrete Happenings: Frames of Resistance - Vostell and Friends in 16mm

    Sun in Your Head (Wolf Vostell, 1963)

    Frames of Resistance explores Wolf Vostell and other Fluxus filmmakers’ use of film as political interventions into the built environment and the media landscape. Vostell proposed this list of films to be shown during his visit to the MCA in January 1970 when he supervised the production of Concrete Traffic. Screening are Vostell’s films Sun in Your Head (1963), Starfighter (1967), and others.

    Presented by UChicago Arts, the Department of Cinema and Media Studies, and the Film Studies Center.

  • Troubling the Image: Tales of Sound and Vision

    The five-program series "Troubling the Image: New + Restored Experimental Cinema" features an eclectic and wide-ranging group of works that celebrate the vibrancy of experimental and almost-experimental cinema from near and far, now and then.

    Directly and obliquely, narratives are enacted, told, sung, and implied. Keewatin Dewdney’s Wildwood Flower (1971) is a simple, lovely imagining of the Carter Family’s eponymous song. Lois Patiño’s ghost-like smugglers haunt a phantasmagorical Portuguese mountain region in the cryptic Night without Distance (2015). Robert Flaherty’s long-lost film A Night of Storytelling (1935) captures the essence of Irish oral folklore. French-based Iranian filmmaker Arash Nassiri visualizes a conspiracy-driven monologue with a hallucinatory trip through the Paris catacombs in Darwin Darwah (2016). In Edward R. Feil’s The Inner World of Aphasia (1968) medical instructional film becomes a psychological horror film when a nurse becomes the patient.

  • Troubling the Image: Color My World

    The five-program series "Troubling the Image: New + Restored Experimental Cinema" features an eclectic and wide-ranging group of works that celebrate the vibrancy of experimental and almost-experimental cinema from near and far, now and then.

    Focused on art, design, and photography, with the use of color as a unifying element, this program includes a striking selection of abstract and representational works. Joseph Cornell’s celebrated found-footage film Rose Hobart (1936) serves as a center around which circulates David Rimmer’s eye-popping Variations on a Cellophane Wrapper (1970), T. Marie’s gorgeous minimalist video series Panchromes I, II, III (2014), Janie Geiser’s photo-collaged Flowers of the Sky (2016), William E. Jones’ appropriated images of labor and workers on foreign currency in Model Workers (2014), and Amit Dutta’s riff on the work of 18th century Indian miniature painter Nainsukh. Onscreen pre-show is Barry Doupé’s Lite-Brite-like video loop Dots (2016).

  • Carving the Ball of Sound: Film and Video with Leighton Pierce

    Threshold of Affinity (Leighton Pierce, 2016)

    For more than 30 years, Leighton Pierce has explored memory and perception in a series of stunningly shot, impressionistic short films and videos that exploit cinematic space and time and expand the interplay between sound and image. Pierce executes all aspects of his works himself including the conception, cinematography, editing, and sound design and composition. Tonight he will screen old and new works, including Glass (1998), Wood (2000), White Ash (2014), and new works in progress.

  • Film Studies Center: Films of Mark LaPore

    Crossroad (Mark LaPore & Phil Solomon, 2005)

    From the 1980s until his death in 2005, American filmmaker Mark LaPore turned his intense gaze towards documenting life across several continents, as well as virtual worlds.  Whether training his Super 8 camera on Sudanese life early in his career or documenting the faces and gestures of laborers during his travels in India and Sri Lanka, LaPore cemented a position not only as a master of the visual essay, but also as one of cinema’s keenest chroniclers of the wanderer’s impulse.  Renowned for his penetrating style, LaPore’s films achieve a rare blend of sensuousness and severity, mixing subtle observation with stark juxtapositions.

  • Slow Glass and other films

    Slow Glass (John Smith, 1988-91)

    Wry and formally ingenious, John Smith’s films are playful explorations of the language of cinema and thought-provoking reflections on the image’s role in politics, war, and the global economy. The 2013 Jarman Award winner will screen and discuss a selection of films from throughout his career including Slow Glass (1988-91), an exploration of memory, perception and change through the stories of a nostalgic glazier; Blight (1994-96) a stunning montage depicting the destruction of a London street to make way for new roads; and Pyramids / Skunk (Hotel Diaries #5) (2006-07), in which a chocolate bar in a Rotterdam hotel room eventually reminds the filmmaker that there are important things going on in the world outside.
