Nicky Hamlyn and Neil Henderson both make observational films that are most obviously documentaries when they focus on sites that are fast disappearing. Hamlyn's Gasometers 4 is part of a series of films recording the dismantling of gas holders in North London, while Henderson's Grain Tower centres on a giant power station chimney that has recently been demolished.

Deborah Stratman presents O’er the Land (2009) along with selections from Canyon Cinema’s collection.

This evening and special presentation is curated by Light Field, and is co-presented by Headlands Center for the Arts, Pro Arts Gallery and Canyon Cinema, with San Francisco Cinematheque. Nick Collins has been making films since the late 1970s. They centre on small scale instances of human geography and habitation, spanning investigations of archeological sites to contemporary environs. Graphic patterns of light and shadow are the focus of his observational camera, with his subjects including Greek temples, domestic gardens, and town squares. Collins has often collected his films together in short series of 'little films' reflecting their lyricism.

DIM Cinema: Almost Empty Rooms

DIM Cinema presents a free screening pairing two canonical works of Canadian experimental film: Michael Snow’s single-take across a New York loft, perhaps “the most consequential zoom shot in the history of cinema” (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Monthly Film Bulletin), and Alberta-born, B.C.-based filmmaker Ellie Epp’s 12-shot study of a soon-to-be-demolished public bath in London, which “maps another way out of structural film toward a cinema of delicate implication” (Bart Testa, Canadian Encyclopedia).
