    Take the 5:10 to Dreamland (Bruce Conner, 1977)

    The strict separation between art forms belongs to the past. In a continuous cross-fertilization, different art forms inspire, influence and reinforce each other, although sometimes they can not let to ruff or laugh with the other. During the first part of the evening we highlight artists whose practices can be seen as a amalgam of different diciplines. The second part focusses mainly on Duchamp and his unlimited practice. Starting with Anémic Cinéma, we describe his influence on the work of Maya Deren and Liliane Lijn.

    Las películas de Péter Lichter serán presentadas en el contexto de Códec Festival/Muestra de Vídeo y Creaciones Sonoras, en Ciudad de México el próximo 2 de diciembre. Códec es un festival que sintetiza y articula los códigos de expresión de diversos campos sonoros y visuales, explorando especialmente las nuevas formas del lenguaje y la narrativa audiovisual. Códec mostrará en su noche de inauguración una selección de las obras de Lichter, realizadas entre 2009 y 2015: Light-sleep, Polaroids, Cassette, Look Inside The Ghost Machine, No Signal Detected, Pure Virtual Function - y su reciente trabajo: Non-Places: Beyonde The Infinte.

  • Out of Sight, Out of Mind

    Inspired by a new video from visually impaired artist Lorne Marin (his first moving-image work in over 30 years), this program envisions the act of film/video-making as an attempt to trace that which can no longer be seen. These artists explore the image’s transformation as it passes from the immediacy of seeing to the cages of memory, manipulating materials in ways that directly or indirectly evoke an array of perceptual aberrations. From common chemical reactions to encroaching blindness, these interferences remind us of the lamentable fragility of our sight. But they also reinforce the mind’s ability to capture fleeting visions that, though long lost, may never be forgotten.

    La tarde del jueves 26 de noviembre se proyectan los trabajos de Klara Ravat y el colectivo OJOBOCA en las instalaciones del Goethe Institut de Barcelona. Esta actividad anunciada con el explícito título de Proyecciones de cine analógico experimental forma parte de las actividades organizadas en motivo de los sesenta años del Goethe Institut en la Ciudad Condal. Klara Ravat presenta una selección de trabajos en celuloide (super 8 y 16 mm) que van del collage de formas abstractas al impresionismo de trasfondo feminista, pasando por los juegos perceptivos, tanto visuales como olfativos. Anja Dornieden y Juan David González Monroy, los dos responsables de OJOBOCA, ofrecen un conjunto de filmes que parten de la experimentación fílmica, implementada artesanalmente durante la filmación y el revelado de los materiales, para proponer una sesión titulada Horrorismo para principiantes, principinates para el horrorismo que revela inquietudes psicológicas participativas.

  • First Thought, Best Thought: A Compendium of Camera Roll Films

    Eye Music in Red Major (Marie Menken, 1961)

    Using a single hundred-foot roll of 16mm film to create an unedited camera-roll film -- fresh from the lab and onto the screen -- has a certain appeal to me. Partly it’s the practical aspect of DIY efficacy that comes with circumventing the costly steps of post-production. With editing there is something diluted from this raw power of the pure, unadulterated footage, no matter how masterfully the material is pruned and refashioned. Perhaps the phrase of Allen Ginsberg, Chogyam Trungpa, and others, “First thought, best thought” expresses this energy present in the camera-roll film?

  • DIM Cinema: Almanac (Circa 1970)

    In 1970, a unique project was commissioned by the Stills Division of the National Film Board of Canada: fifteen West Coast artists -- many of them using a camera for the first time -- were invited to create a series of photographic booklets that were later compiled into an anthology. The B.C. Almanac(h) C-B artists conceived the book as an exhibition, and designed the accompanying exhibition as a 3-D version of the book’s production. To bring to light this forgotten event in the history of West Coast media art, Presentation House Gallery has reprinted the anthology and remounted the exhibition, along with works from the period by artists featured in the book.
