  • Synch Pulse - No. 13: Analogue Electronic Music

    This Synch Pulse screening will showcase a selection of shorts featuring some of the early experimenters with electronic music. In the first half, pioneering composers in Britain, France, Germany, Holland and the USA, are shown at work in their studios in the 1960s, surrounded by tape recorders and analogue tone generating equipment.

    A partir de una conversación filosófica ficticia de Diderot, Michael Snow hizo una película que es un auténtico tratado sobre las distintas formas de mirar y escuchar en el cine, en el que adopta un tono de sátira semejante al del enciclopedista francés. Este extenso trabajo fílmico aborda de manera exhaustiva muchos de los problemas perceptivos que suscita el cine sonoro.

  • Refle-x-périmental #16 : Focus on the Canyon Cinema Co-op

    In 2025, Refle-x-périmental continues to pay tribute to the work of experimental film cooperatives that emerged from the 1960s onwards, embracing independence, rebellion, and the (re)invention of both avant-garde cinema and thought. After celebrating the co-ops founded in New York, Hamburg, and Amsterdam, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Paris Films Coop, the winter season will open with a focus on the West Coast of the United States.

  • Collective Filmmaking: a Chorus of Resistance

    In the two decades of the 1960s and 1970s, a wave of filmmakers united into film clubs, and film collectives, a shift from an individual, hierarchical model of production to one based on fluidity and embracing the DIY and ‘amateur’ spirit of such collaborations. Nevertheless, the screening and post-screening talk aim to emphasise the labour of female filmmakers within such collectives, who are often written out of the narratives of their radical efforts.

  • Moments from a Sensual Cinema: A Tribute to Malcolm Le Grice

    Last year, BIMI ran a series of screenings inspired by the journal Afterimage, showing some of the avant-garde work it had celebrated. One English filmmaker who could well have been included sadly left us in December. Malcolm Le Grice was a towering figure in independent and avant-garde film, not only in Britain but known around the world as a driving force in the arts lab movement, and a mainstay of the London Filmmakers Co-Op during its most influential period.
