    The call for entries is open until July 30, 2010, for the 'Rencontres Internationales' that will take place in Paris at the Centre Pompidou from Nov. 25 to Dec. 4, 2010, and in Madrid and Berlin in 2011.
    Those three events will feature an international programming focusing on film, video and multimedia, gathering works of artists and filmmakers recognized on the international scene along with young artists and filmmakers.

    The 'Rencontres Internationales' offers more than a simple presentation of the works. It introduces an intercultural forum gathering various guests from all over the world - artists and filmmakers, institutions and emerging organizations - to testify of their reflections and their experiences, but also of artistic and cultural contexts that are often undergoing deep changes.
    The 'Rencontres Internationales' reflects specificities and convergences of artistic practices between new cinema and contemporary art, explores emerging media art practices and their critical purposes, and makes possible a necessary time when points of view meet and are exchanged.
    The event aims at presenting works to a broad audience, at creating circulations between different art practices and between different audiences, as well as creating new exchanges between artists, filmmakers and professionals.
    It seeks to contribute to a reflection on our contemporary culture of image via a compelling program opened to everyone..

    In 2007, the Rencontres Internationales, which initially took place in Paris and Berlin, opened up to a third city: Madrid. The event constitutes a unique artistic and cultural platform in Europe for artists, professional networks and various audiences. The venues in the three cities are in particular the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, the Reina Sofia National Museum and the Spanish Cinematheque in Madrid.

    Mono No Aware is not a film festival; its focus is the cinematic experience. Inspired by the unique qualities of live performance and viewing film prints, it encourages live music, theatrical performance, audio and additional visuals to accompany the film piece.

    You are welcome to submit. Mono No Aware is open to any person or group of persons making work incorporating Super8 or 16mm film format as part of that presentation. For example: blending film & theater performance, musicians creating a visual experience for their sound, & experimental filmmakers working with story tellers. Entries will only be accepted on Super8 or 16mm film. FILM ONLY. No Digital Video.

    Part of our purpose in having this gathering is to put an emphasis on the cinematic experience. Film & video are so easily accessible, you can watch something on a website, television, a home projector, or even your cell phone. For some filmmakers those vehicles are copies of the original artwork, each one degraded by its format. We believe there is a magic in seeing the film as a print. There is a presence a poet has reading his/her own writing. There is a feeling that resonates in your chest when you see a band live. For these reasons we are encouraging live music, performance, and audio to expand the cinematic experience beyond the screen. We ask that in the spirit of the festival you not video or create copies of your performance. Some participants have gone as far as to destroy the work after its first run at the event.

    Embrace the film medium. Cut & splice found footage you picked up at a yard sale. Take all your unused footage from an old project and create something new with the unused scenes. Spend 50 bucks to shoot & process 100 feet of 16mm & make a 3 minute masterpiece with a friend's Bolex. Paint on the film surface. Go on eBay and pick up a dozen old reels for ten bucks. Run 10 projectors at once on a single screen. Splice, dice, paste, shoot, and do it all over again. Create visual poetry, colorful abstractions, a comedic narrative, a cinematic comet that will light up the space for several minutes and live in the minds of those there to see it in its pure state. While it's there, fill the audience's ears with a score nothing short of sonorous.

    In September 2010 we will offer a range of workshops to those interested in making work for submission. We also will have Super 8mm cameras & editing equipment available for rental from our home office, if you are interested please contact us to set up an appointment.

    1st Annual MIY (Make It Yourself) Contest: The 60 Second Hand Job Presented by Video Pool Media Arts Centre

    Contest Opens: May 5, 2010 – Deadline extended to June 19, 2010

    Video Pool is accepting submissions for our juried 1st Annual MIY Contest - The 60 Second Hand Job. We are seeking submission of video made by using a hand held camera, is one minute in duration, and is experimental. The call is open to local, national and international video artists. The submitted videos will be judged on artistic merit and innovation by our amazing panel of artists, and they will be exhibited online.

    Video Pool Media Arts Centre is a nonprofit artist-run and media production centre dedicated to independent video, audio and computer-integrated multimedia production, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

    PRIZES: First Prize is $500.00 CAD and inclusion in Video Pool's Movie-oke screening and fundraising event June 12, 2010 in fabulous downtown Winnipeg. Nine Runner-Up videos will be selected and these videos will be included in a screening at Video Pool's Movie-oke fund-raising event; each of the Runner-Up artists will receive a $50.00 CAD screening fee.

    FLEX, the Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival, is now accepting submissions for its fourth biennial competitive festival taking place February 18-20, 2011 in Gainesville, FL.  The exclusive focus of the festival is on experimental short media, but we encourage artists to challenge us to rethink what 'experimental' means.  Work may draw on documentary, animation, avant garde, underground, or other traditions‹-or no traditions at all.  Cash and in-kind prizes will be awarded in each of 4 categories (film/video, small/large).  Previous jurors have included Craig Baldwin, Naomi Uman, Mike Plante, Abina Manning, Andrea Grover and Tony Gault.  In addition, the festival has hosted numerous filmmakers including Jim Trainor, Leighton Pierce, Deborah Stratman, Bill Brown, Jim Finn, Robert Todd, Scott Stark, Jacqueline Goss, Helga Fanderl, Michael Gitlin, and Johan Grimonprez.

    creatives are increasingly using computer code as a raw material to create generative, fluid and self-perpetuating moving image. this brand-new new programme will showcase the most imaginative examples of work in this field.

    onedotzero has always been rather partial to our mechanical friends of the future, demonstrated over the years in the festival programming. we are now seeking robot-themed or inspired shorts, which explore the ethics and potential social effects of a world shared with robots or androids.

    Only the films released between 2007 and 2010 will be selected for the competition (short or feature films). You are welcome to submit any other program for a screening outside of competition.

    What is «underground»?
    It is always easier for the filmmakers to decide if their film is underground or not. But to give an idea of what we are looking for, we think that underground films do not make any compromise to be made or to be seen. Underground films accept no limits, no censorships and always present an innovative point of view. The LUFF has been created after the New York Underground Film Festival, then its purpose remains the same: to support and promote films that push boundaries and break new ground -- that challenge, entertain and provoke.

    How to Enter
    Register your film online and send a preview copy of your film to the selection committee.

    Accepted format are:
    * VHS (PAL, SECAM or NTSC)
    * DVD (PAL or NTSC, any Region coding will be accepted)
    * DVD-R/DVD+R (PAL or NTSC)
    Note: DVD-R/DVD+R have to be burnt correctly so that they can be read on most of the DVD players. In order to do so, please burn your DVD at the lowest speed you can (1X 1’385Ko/s). Every film that has been badly burnt – which means that the DVD is unreadable or the picture quality is bad (pixels, image drops,...) will not be considered for the selection. Also, try to use good quality DVD.

    Every other preview formats will be refused.

    Each entry must be accompanied by
    * a completed entry form (photocopies are acceptable) per film
    * a press kit if available (the absence of press kit has no influence on the selection)

    A Note on "Category"
    Many works entered into the Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival defy easy classification, but it’s important for us that you check only ONE category for your entry. So please follow these guidelines:

    * If it is a documentary or animation, check one of those categories. If it’s not a documentary, and not animation, and it has a story, check narrative feature (for works 60 minutes and over) or narrative short (for works under 60 minutes).
    * For the purposes of our event, “experimental” is used exclusively for non-narrative, non- documentary works? If it’s not a documentary, and does not have a story, then check experimental.
    * If you feel that your film fits experimental and animation equally, we recommend that you choose animation.
    * If you don’t follow the above guidelines, we will re-classify your entry appropriately!

    Shipping the preview tapes or DVD
    Cost of shipping to the festival is covered by the entrant. Shipping must be prepaid. Collect or COD shipments cannot be accepted. Each tape must be marked with the title of the entry. Entrant's identification must be on the case and the tape. Please use only plastic or bubble-pack cases when shipping entries - no fiber cases please! Do not forget to specify on your package the following mention: For cultural purposes only – no commercial value

    No preview tape or DVD will be sent back to the original sender, whether or not the film has be selected or not.

    The go and return transport of selected feature film prints would be at our charge. The go transport of selected short film prints would be at your charge. The return transport of selected short films print would be at our charge.

    Entry does not guarantee placement in the program. However, each submission will be carefully considered. Festival organizers will pre-select entries that will enter the competition. If your film is chosen, you will be notified current of September 2010. The exhibition print has to be in our hand on October 10 2010.

    The LUFF is not responsible for lost, stolen or missing entries. We would like to remind you to send a COPY of your original work. Due to the high number of submissions, the preview tapes or any supporting material will be kept in the festival’s archives and will not be sent back. Please not send SASEs for the return of your tape, because we will simply ignore them and use the stamps. Do not send money either.

    The London Film Festival will present its annual weekend dedicated to avant-garde and artists’ film & video on 22-24 October 2010.

    If you would like your work to be considered for the programme, please send preview copies as soon as possible or email details of works in progress. There is no entry fee.

    Works must have been made within the last two years and should receive their UK theatrical premiere in the festival. Recent archival restorations may also be considered.

    The festival can screen all standard formats of film and video in the cinemas at BFI Southbank. Multi- or special projection events can be possible. The preferred tape format for video projection is Beta SP or DigiBeta, PAL or NTSC.

    Prior UK theatrical, UK festivals, UK television screenings and UK dvd / video releases disqualify films from entry.

    Works must have been completed within the last two years. Recent archival preservations, which have not yet screened in the UK, are also eligible.

    Preferred formats for preview are dvd or vhs (PAL, NTSC or SECAM). If necessary, film prints can be sent by special arrangement.

    JURORS

    Noam Gonick(RCA) investigates identities including Winnipeg street gangs, queer hippie cults, ravers, TV psychics, stockbrokers and prison semaphore through photography, film, TV and installation. His films have been presented at the Venice, Berlin, Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals. Gonick’s art has also been exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery and MOCCA at Nuit Blanche. His works are represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery of Canada.

    Deirdre Logue’s film, video and installations focus on self-presentational discourse and the body. Logue’s recent projects include Enlightened Nonsense, 10 short performance films about repetition and Why Always Instead of Just Sometimes, a12 channel self-portrait. Recent solo exhibitions were presented at Oakville Galleries, the Images Festival – awarded Best Installation and Best of the Festival – the Berlin International Film Festival, Beyond/In Western New York and at articule in Montreal. She was a founding member of Media City in Windsor, the Executive Director of the Images Festival, the Executive Director of the Canadian Filmmakers’ Distribution Centre and is currently the Development Director at Vtape.

    Darryl Nepinak (Saulteaux) works at the Ndinawe Youth Resource centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He curated INDIANPEG: Shorts from Winnipeg Aboriginal Filmmakers at the 2006 Gimli Film Festival. Nepinak is the co-founder of Indie ‘N Film/Video Collective and the treasurer of Urban Shaman Gallery. He lived in Gisborne, New Zealand for 10 months in 2004, where he directed a documentary about the 30-year history of Te Ora Hou Aotearoa, a Maori youth organization, and mentored Maori teens in video production. Nepinak learned video production through the NSI Aboriginal Youth Pilot Project and the Aboriginal Broadcasting Training Initiative of the Manitoba Indian Cultural Education Centre.

  • IN-OUT Festival 2010

    IN-OUT Festival will take place in Laznia for the fourth time. Just like last year, it will be open for artists from all over the world. The Festival seeks to select the most interesting video works that search for new formal solutions. The spectrum of interest is defined by the issues of non-narrative presentation of aesthetic problems, and conceptual attempts at posing questions about the nature of the image and its technological layer. The Festival will be accompanied by special screenings. The prizes will be granted by an international Jury.

    Cut and Run is a curatorial project which consists of experimental  film and video programs, curated by Brenda Contreras and Mallary Abel, two filmmakers and Cinema alums from San Francisco State Univerity.  Mallary recently served as the programming associate for UnionDocs.

    Started in early 2009 at San Francisco’s Artist’s Television Access and turned into a  multi-city West Coast tour. Cut and Run’s aim is to explore the range of experimental and avant-garde works, from the past to the present. We celebrate works that deviate from mainstream and traditional narrative film, and opt towards authentic, brave, challenging, stylized, alternative and imagined subjects. Our call for submissions has no direct set theme. Our programs themes develope around the sense we make of the selected works, as well as individual sought-out films that provoked and inspired us.

    **Cut and Run is also accepting venue proposals for exhibitions for our East Coast Tour, as well as independant programs here along the West Coast, currently. If you have a space or microcinema, experimental-friendly to potentially host Cut and Run, contact Mallary.

    Jay Rosenblatt, Robert Nelson, Karl Lind, Christine Noll Brinckmann, Warren Haack, Paula Levine, Gretchen Hogue, Joshua Solondz, Dustin Zemmel, and more.**

    Past Cut and Run screenings took place at:
    Artist’s Television Access in San Francisco, The Waypost in Portland, Oregon, NWFF in Seattle, The Basment in Nevada City, CA, Beatnik Studios in Sacramento, Jensen Mainstage in Santa Barbara, Echo Park Film Center in LA, Ditch Projects in Springfield, Oregon, UnionDocs in Brooklyn, NY. Cut and Run also pioneered a guerilla screening on San Francisco’s MUNI rail system in 2009.
