For several decades, Jerome Hiler's work remained one of the best-kept secrets of North American cinema. Since the 1960s, his 16mm films had been limited to private screenings, shown only to his entourage, and have only begun to be unveiled in the last fifteen years.
"By Brakhage debe entenderse como by way of Stan and Jane Brakhage, como en todas mis películas desde que me casé. Viene a significar: «a través de Stan y Jane y los niños Brakhage», porque todos los descubrimientos que antes sólo pasaban a través de mi instrumento, ahora pasan a través de la sensibilidad de mis seres queridos." - Metaphors on Vision, de Stan Brakhage

In February the Barbican is holding a rare screening of Park Lanes, Kevin Jerome Everson’s eight-hour meditation on labour and craft inside a factory producing bowling lane equipment. Mirroring a full workday, the film captures the rhythms of production and the artistry of everyday work without commentary, offering a unique and immersive perspective on industrial life.
Influenced by the New Wave films in the West, the DIY practices of film clubs, and a dynamic experimentalism among the leftist youth, the 1960s saw the emergence of an alternative cinephilia in both Taiwan and Hong Kong. Curated by Sine Screen in collaboration with the Taiwan International Documentary Film Festival, this programme presents a selection of essential avant-garde films made during that period.
