FUGUE STATE is a new art and cinema festival based in Chicago, NYC, and Los Angeles, embracing radical expression in time-based media.
Programmed by M Woods, multidisciplinary artist, curator, and founder of Disassociative Productions ( www.thedigitalsickness.com ), Phase 1 of the festival presents an entirely independent showcase of experimental and underground cinema screening at The Film-Maker's Coop in NYC, Comfort Station in Chicago, and the Los Angeles Center for Digital Art.
Constructed as a means to usurp the nepotistic and cronyistic back dealings of other film festivals, Fugue State kept its commitment to create compelling programming based mostly on submissions with the two exceptions being the works of the extraordinary artists Dana Dawud and Danielle Wakin. The festival features 67 works of art in total, the majority of which will be screened from August 20-23rd as the festival opens in multiple cities.
On August 7th, Los Angeles Center For Digital Arts opens its new August exhibitions as part of Downtown LA's Art Walk Thursdays featuring a looping presentation of two programs from Fugue State. Artists Jeny Amaya, Danielle Wakin, Victor Acevedo, Isaac Sherman, and Takahiro Suzuki are all expected to be in-person, which also features the work of LA-based Janie Geiser. This Fugue State-curated installation will play throughout August.
On August 20th, Comfort Station in Chicago presents the first theatrical programs of the festival, featuring the work of local Chicago filmmakers expected in-person for a post-screening Q&A, including Charles Cadkin, Jose Luis Benavides, Drew Durepos, Alicia Mujynya, Laura Herman, Eliza Fernand, Henry Hanson, and Jimmy Schaus. Starting at 7:00PM with a 15 minute intermission.
From August 21st - 22nd, Fugue State moves to NYC for screenings at the historic NY Film-Maker's Coop featuring in-person appearances by Sage Ó Tuama, Cameron Chester Black, Sonia Rosa Kahn, and Erik Sutch whose nostalgic Myself Two Seconds to Cry will be accompanied by a live score.
Finally Fugue State returns to Los Angeles Center for Digital Art on August 23rd at 7PM for a double-feature program with in-person appearances by Jeny Amaya, Isaac Sherman, and Danielle Wakin.
Fugue State will soon leak information regarding its September/October programming, which includes feature film screenings in the Chicago area.
