Five films. One afternoon inside the restless, tactile cinema of Kenji Onishi.

Working with 8mm film since his teenage years, Japanese filmmaker Kenji Onishi has built a body of work rooted in experimental and personal filmmaking.

Born in Mie Prefecture in 1973, Onishi began shooting with a second-hand 8mm camera while still in high school and founded the filmmaking group Cinema Train in 1995.Across his films, light, grain, noise, bodies, everyday spaces, and the physical texture of celluloid become as important as narrative itself.

OVEREXPOSURE brings together five of Onishi’s short works from the 1990s—a period of restless experimentation with image, sound, intimacy, and the possibilities of film.
