With live sound by Sarah Halpern and Rachael Guma Artist in person — Event in person only
Microscope is excited to present an in-person screening of films by Chicago-based artist and filmmaker Jean Sousa. This will be the first physical screening at the gallery of works by the artist — who previously appeared in an online only event in November 2020 — and will include the projection of several of her works in their original 16mm film format.
Although collage has a long established place in visual art, its use in commercial cinema is rare. Experimental film and video provides a platform to play with and reorder both picture and sound, by using fragments of pre-existing material to generate new combinations and meanings. Found footage from the amateur or commercial world is repurposed and reimagined, and regular soundtrack conventions are disrupted to create unexpected juxtapositions and new textures.
This summer, South London welcomes the ninth edition of London Experimental, an anti-festival that platforms the voices of emerging experimental artists.
On Sunday, June 15th, the anti-festival will take over the Birdhouse Brewery in Herne Hill with informal drop-in-style screenings showing 40 short films across three large screening rooms. The event opens at noon and runs until late, encouraging filmmakers, curators, and the general public to engage with a diverse range of experimental short films. The event is free of charge and open to all.
