WHEN THE EYE TREMBLES
Tuesday, December 10th
at Luminor Hotel de Ville, Paris
Screening introduced by Jean-Michel Bouhours.
This screening accompanies the publication of When the Eye Trembles: The Cinema of Paolo Gioli by Jean-Michel Bouhours (bilingual edition), with a foreword by Georges Didi-Huberman, at Light Cone Editions. It is published with the support of the Centre national des arts plastiques (Cnap).
Paolo Gioli (1942-2022) was an Italian artist, photographer and filmmaker who placed experimentation at the heart of his work from the second half of the 1960s onwards. In the context of the development of new media technologies, Gioli created a complex and fascinating visual universe through his "wild" practice, seeking innovative aesthetic solutions through reduction or a deviant use of machines. As an inventor of a cameraless photographic cinema and a craftsman of a cinema povera, Paolo Gioli has left behind almost forty films, as well as a considerable body of photographic and pictorial work. He owes his exceptional longevity in the Italian experimental cinema movement partly to his status as an artist-hermit.
