Between Film and Art by the Eastern Neighbours Film Festival
travels to De Balie in Amsterdam
on Saturdays March 21 and March 28 at 17:00
Eastern European experimental and artist-driven cinema today
Including filmmaker Q&As, live dual 16mm projection performance
A programme of four films across two Saturdays that reactivate and continue cinematic lineages from the margins: of the canons, of Europe and the West, and of normative regimes of visibility and production. Curated by Temra Pavlović.
On March 21, two films shaped by patient attention and tender politics
- Unstable Rocks (25 min, 2024) by Ewelina Rosińska with Nuno Barroso, a 16mm montage moving alongside eco-activists in rural Portugal and attuned to animal life and landscape.
- Rudzienko (53 min, 2016) by Sharon Lockhart, made over three years in close collaboration with young women at a sociotherapy center in Poland: a work of slow cinema negotiating the fragility of appearing and disappearing.
With in-person Q&As with Ewelina Rosińska and Sharon Lockhart
On March 28, two works in which cinema becomes ritual and bridge.
- Sílvia das Fadas and Masha Godovannaya perform their dual 16mm projection performance her* hands and his shape (~15 min, 2017—), a cinematic séance invoking a lineage of women filmmakers who worked politically.
- Bibi Seshanbe (52 min, 2022) by Saodat Ismailova: part re-enacted myth, part ethnographic ritual documentation, and part contemporary scenes of a women's sanctuary in Uzbekistan — connected across deep time.
With in-person Q&As with Sílvia das Fadas and Masha Godovannaya
