Presented in collaboration with CIRCUIT (New Zealand), this screening programme delves into the profound theme of Indigenous rematriation, a concept which proposes restoration of balance, harmony, and connection to the land through a whakapapa (= lineage) of wahine (= female) knowledge.

Facing the many contemporary political, historical, and environmental issues in New Zealand, or Aotearoa, and the world today, the six films in Rematriation continue conversations about decolonisation, cultural continuity, and the shared responsibility of nurturing a more inclusive and equitable world. Together they celebrate the transformative power of rematriation as a celebration of identity, resilience, and the enduring connection between people and the land they call home. The screened works seek to foster a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Indigenous communities, whilst affirming ongoing efforts to restore and preserve Indigenous cultural identities on a spiritual level.

This programme is curated by Tanya Te Miringa Te Rorarangi Ruka, CIRCUIT’s ‘Kaitiaki Kiriata’, a curatorial position which supports a Māori curator to present artists video in contexts framed by Te Ao Māori (= the Māori worldview).

The screening will be preceded by a video introduction by the curator and attended by Mark Williams, director of CIRCUIT.

20/20 Vision is a monthly micro-cinema night in argos’s Black Box, a shifting line-up of video works, from shorts to features, from their archive and beyond. With only 20 chairs for 20 spectators, the audience gathers for a screening programme shaped around a topic or a filmmaker.
