Selected Filmworks of Kenji Onishi

We invite you to the new appointment at Borgo Santa Brigida 5/a in the discovery of the unearthed films of Kenji Onishi, a filmmaker who with his over 200 works has marked and lived the last thirty years of the Japanese underground scene. For the second Italian monographic retrospective  dedicated to the director, 9 exclusive works have been selected, most of which have never been screened in public before.

The screening will be held in Parma in the Borgo Santa Brigida 5/a theatre at 5:00 pm. A year after the event "Out of Frame: The Filmworks of Kenji Onishi", we gather on the summer's last evening to witness a two-hour long nightmare and delve into the darkest and most murky part of the filmmaker's visions. To quote Onishi himself, "the images on the screen are the skin of my films. Some may seem infected or wounded, while others are sick", and it is precisely on the most unhealthy and perverse pieces of the director's work that this retrospective focuses.

We present a preview of a series of titles made between 1995 and 2012, from the period which immediately follows his first works to the last years of the Single8 format. Unbridled depravity and overflowing instability drag us into the dimension of violence and contemplation of Kenji Onishi. Serial killers, ghosts and vagabonds trapped in an endless nightmare on celluloid, as well as in the apocalyptic EAST END (2001), a medium-length film on video and rarely screened.

From the end of the century to the end of the world, the world of Kenji Onishi awaits you again at  
Borgo Santa Brigida 5/a .
