Canadian Underground
Films from the Black Zero Collection, guest curated by Stephen Broomer

This presentation of Canadian Underground films is drawn from the collection of experimental film distributor Black Zero, and all historical films presented here were restored by Canadian filmmaker & film historian Stephen Broomer. These films, spanning 1968 to 2011, reflect a broad range of engagements with the experimental tradition by filmmakers whose work merges material self-consciousness & personal exploration. The program begins with a formal demonstration of an innovative approach to film sound (Rick Hancox’s Wild Sync), & continues from there towards the peering, obscured vision of a probing pinhole (Mark Loeser’s Sugar Beach). Between, there are explorations of found images & of cinemas past (Christine Lucy Latimer’s Over {Past:Future} Sight, Izabella Pruska-Oldenhof's Fugitive L(i)ght), & an extended visual meditation on ecological decline (Josephine Massarella’s Green Dreams). As a post-script, Bob Cowan’s sweetly mournful Remembrance and Goodbye (1968) is an elegy to his mother.
