Abraham Ravett, born in Poland in 1947, is the son of Holocaust survivors. He grew up in Israel and the USA, where he still lives and teaches as a filmmaker. Ravett's mother, Fela, lost her family in the Holocaust, including her daughter, Tońcia, in the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. In his short film "Half-Sister," Ravett explores what kind of life his half-sister, whom he never knew, could have led, drawing on his mother's memories and Tońcia's only photograph.

Ravett's father, Chaim, survived the Łódź/Litzmannstadt ghetto. In Henryk Ross's famous photographs from the ghetto, which have been published in several anthologies, the director searches for his father, who, unlike his mother, rarely spoke about the period before 1945. Thus, Ravett's films reflect diverse family experiences: refusal to tell stories as well as openness and the capacity for memory. (SA)
