Cinema Konsonant and Kino Ponrepo present a two-program screening in remembrance of Fred Worden, who passed away on March 7 this year. Fred Worden (b. 1946, New York), described as "post-1960s pioneer of cinematic optical investigation," spent more than five decades exploring what film preservationist Mark Toscano calls "the outer limits of our vision." Having studied under Pat O'Neill and Robert Nelson at CalArts, he experimented with a wide range of approaches to filmmaking, gradually developing a cinematic language increasingly detached from conventional representation. Both programs will focus on Worden's analogue films, in which he explores the inner workings of the cinematic apparatus and the mysterious boundary between stillness and motion in our perception of projected images. The screenings will also include several films that Worden himself found inspiring, offering a glimpse into the ideas that shaped his own work.
Film prints are provided by Light Cone and Canyon Cinema.
