Since the late 1980s, Matthias Müller has made some of the most important contributions to experimental cinema in Germany. Whether in his own work or in his collaboration with artist Christoph Girardet, which has grown since 1999: At the heart of this work is an exploration of appropriated footage, some found by chance and some elaborately researched and collected. Its origins range from Hollywood to home movies, from stock footage agencies to private chat rooms.

In a five-day seminar and a public screening, Matthias Müller will present his artistic practice of de- and recontextualization using many film examples. Müller's work is also a critical process that questions common representations of gender roles, stagings of the body or depictions of childhood in cinema. The spectrum ranges from the personally influenced films of his early work, in which his own and appropriated material are intertwined, to his artistic collaborations with Christoph Girardet, in which exclusively found footage is used. Many aspects of this particular artistic process will be examined in the seminar, analogue and digital collecting will be discussed as artistic practices, and the working processes that underlie Müller's work will be precisely traced. Films by other artists will also be screened, which are located between art and cinema and which have inspired Müller's work. In a screening at the Amirani cinema , Müller will present "Phoenix Tapes" and "No Animal", his first and his most recent joint projects with Christoph Girardet; with "Locomotive" he will bring a material-rich triple projection to the screen (October 3, 7 pm). In a concluding presentation of 20 experimental films by students and graduates, Müller will introduce himself as a teacher who has been teaching experimental film at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne for 21 years.

Matthias Müller, born in 1961, has participated in numerous international festivals, such as Cannes, Venice and Berlin, and has been awarded many prizes. His work has also been exhibited in various solo and group shows and is in the collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, and Tate Modern, London, among others. This event will be the first presentation of Matthias Müller's work in Georgia. It will be held in English. The admission is free.
