For his film project “12 ASTERISCI” (named after the twelve stars on the European flag), Telemach Wiesinger visited numerous locations on the internal and external borders of the European Community and, with the help of his 16mm film camera, transformed them into seemingly otherworldly black-and-white scenes. Removed from current political debates, the sometimes archaic-looking artifacts reveal the anachronistic character of these ultimately arbitrary borders and demarcations. The montage places the scenes in a continuous “flow.” This open, experimental form has the effect of visually liquefying the borders and thus aesthetically overcoming their rigid regulations in the audience's perception.
12 ASTERISCI has received numerous awards at international film festivals, including the Italian Film Critics' Award SNCCI and the International Competition Award at the 61st Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema Pesaro. “For its ability to show through images, concrete and symbolic at the same time, the contemporary political and (anti)human drift. Furthermore, thanks to the layered work on sound, the author evokes a historical dimension that allows the past to mirror itself in the present, creating unsettling questions about the future.” - Italian Film Critics' Award SNCCI
