Microscope is extremely pleased to present “Never Twice”, an exhibition of live moving image performance in the context of what is usually referred to as expanded cinema: works free from the constraints or presenting alternatives to the traditional theatrical screening setting – single projection on a screen before an audience. The title of the exhibit, a reference to the quote from Heraclitus “one cannot step into the same river twice”, emphasizes the ephemeral character of this art form, one always intrinsically connected to a “here” and “now”, a multi-sensorial experience that although it may be performed again, it cannot ever be replicated.

During the 42nd Film Fest Gent, Art Cinema OFFoff collaborates with Vooruit and Film Fest Gent and brings a night focused on (British) Expanded Cinema. The visitors will be dazzled by multiple projections on one screen and become the protagonists. Expect both iconic and (yet) unknown performances from the (British) underground.

Programme

Microscope presents with the Filmmakers’ Cooperative "Projection Instructions: An Evening of Expanded Cinema" curated by Josh Guilford and featuring works by Paul Sharits and contemporary artists Malcolm Le Grice, Rose Lowder, Jennifer Reeves and Guy Sherwin.

At this live experimental cinema and sound event, filmmakers and sound artists collaborate to create a new audiovisual experience. The evening features unedited Super 8 films shot by Chris H. Lynn accompanied by a live improvised score from Daniel Barbiero, Gary Rouzer, and Chris H. Lynn. The score will include double bass, clarinet, cello, objects, and various sound sources. The rhythm of the projector and the internal tempo of the shots will also contribute to the audiovisual experience.
