MONO NO AWARE's annual exhibition is held to give open forum to work that, because of its transient nature, might not otherwise find a venue in a traditional movie theater, gallery or stage. Inherent in the work is a sense of connectivity and shared viewer experience. The curated program focuses on live projected elements as part of sculpture, installation and performance. Balagan is pleased to present – along with Ricardo De Lima and the ICA, Boston – a program of two expanded cinema performances that challenge the perception of film as a static and unchanging medium or mere document of past artistic efforts. By introducing chance elements, both in the filming and the exhibition (which pairs live improvised sound to multi-layered 16mm projections), the performers draft the audience into the role of active participants; Unexpected mental connections are drawn between the disparate elements, mined from the depths of our collective unconscious and manifested as veritable waking dreams.

Video Jam is an ongoing series of unique, experimental events which seek to explore and re-examine the relationship between moving image and live sound by commissioning sound artists to compose original accompaniment for short, contemporary films. Initiated from scratch by a very small team of emerging artists, curators and promoters, the events act as a catalyst in bringing together these two mediums to create a new, third entity to be witnessed as a live experience.
